History of the Land Grant College Program in Hawaii • The University of Hawaii, founded in 1907, was initially the College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts with 5 students in 1908. • The Land Grant College is now the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, one of six colleges located on the UH Manoa campus. “Centennial” – white anthurium bred by UH scientists to celebrate 100th birthday

  11. Classic Example of How a Land Grant College Program Works Tropic Sunrise Society of American Florists/2007 Outstanding Varieties Competition. Drs. Haruyuki Kamemoto and Heidi Kuehnle with “Tropic Fire”. Since 1950 developing disease resistant and novel anthuriums for the flower industry. which helped anthuriums become the state’s most valuable cut-flower crop (farm-gate value of $4.7 million in 2005) Lavendar Lady Society of American Florists/2004 Outstanding Varieties Competition Harold and Eric Tanouye Green Point Nurseries, Inc.

  12. Frank Baensch is currently enrolled as a doctoral candidate at the University of Nagasaki’s Ronpaku Program. This is made possible through an MOU between the Dept. of MBBE/CTAHR and Nagasaki University
