2. 2012-2013 Academic Year • COSE Plan to achieve Key Milestones • Goal: Report progress at the all-college meeting in the fall • 1: Develop and implement a Student Survey for summer classes – repeated fall 12 • Point Person: Dale • Team and tasks: Mark, Kevin, Jayantha, Kurt • Create a survey and recommend it to the SEC • Implement the survey • Make recommendations on how to use the data collected • What is the linkage to the student concerns policy? • 2: Recruitment Materials available for use • Point Person: Dean – pulls groups together • Team: Admissions representative, Susan, use both a School and a College group • Task: Create a consistent and high-quality set of recruitment materials that is web-based as well as traditional • 3: Fall visits to Transfer Schools scheduled • Point Person: David for the college; Kurt for the school • Team: Ram, Mark • Task: Identify the colleges, identify the contacts, schedule fall visits

Develop a set of metrics, by program, to compare ourselves with our competition, and take the data annually. 10. Provost Action Grants – January 2013 Melissa Hanzsek-Brill – Mathematics/Statistics – Project - Student Learning Assistant Utilization will be funded for the full amount you requested of $10,000 SI #4: Strive for excellence in teaching and pedagogy Bruce Jacobson – Biological Sciences – Project - Applied Structural Genomics will be funded for the full amount you requested of $10,000 SI #3: Improve and expand experiential learning/undergraduate research opportunities Ahmet Sezen – Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering – Project - Widespread Use of Microcontrollers will be funded for the full amount you requested of $9,900 SI #3: Improve and expand experiential learning/undergraduate research opportunities LakshmaiahSreerama – Chemistry Program - Bioscience Program Development will be funded for the full amount you requested of $7,220 Addresses SI #2 – Develop new and support existing successful programs Tony Hansen – Atmospheric and Hydrologic Sciences - Develop Computing Minor will be funded for the full amount you requested of $6,800 Addresses SI #2 – Develop new and support existing successful programs Funded $43, 920 or 26.2% of $167,680

Support for conferences, webinars or workshops that focus on any aspect of • the COSE strategic initiatives. • Faculty/Faculties may submit a request for funding that addresses the following: • List the activity you would like to participate in • Provide evidence this activity is related to COSE strategic initiative[s] • Timeline for approval • Illustrate how you would incorporate the knowledge/experienced gained from this activity to enhance student success • Indicate how you would publicize the value this activity had to your professional development and student success • There is not a cap on this funding but a reasonable maximum would seem to be ~$1000. Consider this in the context of any available SCSU short-term research funding.

10. Current COSE/SCEE unit mission statements Atmospheric and Hydrologic Sciences The Department of Atmospheric & Hydrologic Sciences is committed to providing a stimulating and effective Interdisciplinary learning environment for all students it serves through general education and major and minor undergraduate programs in hydrology, meteorology, and earth and space science teaching. Biological Sciences Provide scientific understanding in the biological sciences for students in general education courses, pre-professional and major programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Chemistry Provide a stimulating, intellectual environment for the discovery, integration, application, and communication of chemistry. Physics Work with others to understand, explore, and apply quantitative models of the physical world. Computer Science and Information Technology Prepare students for careers in computing and graduate education with a thorough understanding of computer science and information technologies, provide opportunities to apply that knowledge, and instill enthusiasm for life-long learning. Electrical and Computer Engineering Continues the tradition of excellence and opportunity by providing advanced instruction and training for its students emphasizing practical aspects of electrical &computer engineering to meet the needs of the regional and state economies. Environmental and Technological Studies Provide experiences that promote environmental and technological literacy and also equip students with the ability to comprehend the interconnections between science, technology, society, and the environment developed through education, research, assessment, and appropriate practices. Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering: To provide excellence in education and scholarly expertise to industry in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and Engineering Management to meet the needs of the constituencies &to serve the economies of the state of Minnesota &the nation. Mathematics Provide a stimulating intellectual environment for the discovery, integration, application and communication of mathematical ideas. Statistics Provide a stimulating environment in which students can gain understanding of the concepts, and acquire skills in statistics.

12. How can COSE’s strategic position be improved? Address key needs • Faculty development, to achieve continual improvement • Limit the impact of weak faculty on students • Internal efficiency, to keep programs cost-effective for students and adjust for declining public funding • Student Recruitment and Retention, as competition for students (especially COSE- qualified students) is becoming more intense • K-12 STEM Education, so students have a better foundation of science and engineering knowledge • Foster a culture that expects innovation and collaboration • Funding, recognizing that public funding represents a declining share of SCSU revenue • STEM Graduates, to fill the job placement needs of regional industry

13. Anti-Racist Pedagogy Across the Curriculum (ARPAC) workshopThe Multicultural Resource Center (MRC) and the Community Anti-Racism Education (CARE) Initiative are holding the 5th Anti-Racist Pedagogy Across the Curriculum (ARPAC)workshop to take place this May 15 – 17 and 20 – 23, 2013. This workshop is open to SCSU, MnSCU, and other higher education faculty. Registration and further information are available at: http://www.stcloudstate.edu/care/arpacworkshop.asp The Anti-Racist Pedagogy Across the Curriculum (ARPAC) is a faculty development workshop which supports faculty to incorporate anti-racist pedagogy in their classrooms and disciplines.
