Course Outline Atmospheric Steam • The Basics • Difference between atmospheric and pressure steam • Steam Distributors • General guidelines • Recommended steam line materials • Recommended sizing • Atmospheric steam line rules and guidelines • Condensate lines • Common errors and mistakes
Atmospheric Steam Humidifiers Atmospheric Steam • There are two types of steam humidifiers: • Live Steam – Uses facility boiler steam for humidification • Atmospheric Steam – Steam generated by boiling water internal to unit • LS Humidifier • NHTC Electrode Humidifier
What’s the Difference? Pressure vs. Atmospheric Steam Atmospheric Steam • Steam Pressure! • LS Humidifiers use pressurized steam from boilers, often with • temperatures in excess of 212°F (superheated steam) • 2 – 50 psi for LS Distributors (LS1,2,3 or SAM-e) • 5 – 15 psi for Steam Exchange • Atmospheric humidifiers generate steam at atmosphericpressure and • 212°F • What does that mean? • Atmospheric steam cannot be conveyed long distances under its own pressure • Condensation in atmospheric steam lines is much more significant than in pressurized steam lines • Atmospheric steam line length and sizing will greatly affect the humidifier output
Where Does the Steam Go? Distribution Atmospheric Steam • xSD • Mini SAM-e • SAM-e • In Space Remote Mounted or Built on Blower Pack • Duct Distributors
Main Rules for Atmospheric Steam Lines Atmospheric Steam • Follow recommended materials, size and length • Insulate with 1” pipe insulation • Slope the steam lines • Trap condensate
Material for Steam Lines Atmospheric Steam *Insulating steam lines reduces steam losses
Recommended Max Steam Runs Atmospheric Steam
Equivalent Lengths Atmospheric Steam
Electrode Steam line Chart Atmospheric Steam
Steam Line Installation Back Pressure - NHTC Atmospheric Steam • Fill Cup • Maximum static pressure for electrode steam units is 6”w.c. • Limited by difference in water level height between fill cup and water level in the cylinder (Δh) • Higher static pressure (from duct or long steam line) may prevent cylinder from filling • Δh
Steam Line Installation Back Pressure – GS/SE Atmospheric Steam • Fill Box • GS and SE humidifiers also produce steam at atmospheric pressure • Maximum static pressure for GS/SE units is 12”w.c. • Limited by difference in water level height between fill box and water level in the tank (Δh) • Δh
Steam Line Installation Fill Cup Extension Kit - NHTC Atmospheric Steam • Fill Cup • Fill cup bracket • Over flow hose • Hose from fill valve • Fill hose to cylinder • Fill cup extension kit raises the fill cup 8.5”, increasing the maximum allowable static pressure from 6.5” to 10”w.c.
Steam Line Installation Nortec Steam Hose Atmospheric Steam • Minimum 12” radius • Properly support steam hose • Minimum 12” rise • before bend/turn • *Condensate returned to • Unit or drain • Minimum 12” rise • before bend/turn • *To drain (air gap required) • Condensate at low point in steam hose • Minimum 12” rise • before bend/turn • *To drain (air gap required) • *Condensate should not be routed back to a sink used frequently by personnel.
Steam Line Installation Nortec Steam Hose Atmospheric Steam • When using Nortec steam hose, ensure line is properly supported
Steam Line Installation Upward Slope Atmospheric Steam • 12” • 2”
Steam Line Installation Downward Slope Atmospheric Steam • 12” • 0.5”
Steam Line Installation Hard Pipe Lines Atmospheric Steam • Distributor Above Humidifier • Distributor Below Humidifier • Clamped steam hose • Nortec steam hose may • be used for bends (min. • radius 12”) • Minimum Slope • 2” • Minimum 12” rise • before bend/turn • 12” • Minimum 12” rise • before bend/turn • P-Trap • Condensate Tee • *To drain (air gap required) • *Connection to the humidifier and distributor should be made with NORTEC steam hose
Steam Line Installation Multiple Distributors Atmospheric Steam • Multiple Duct Distributors • Multiple RMBP • Steam lines should be kept as even as possible • Balancing valves may be required • Individually trap condensate before combining to common drain • Ensure minimum clearances between distributors or RMBP are maintained
Steam Line Installation Multiple Units to a Single Distributor Atmospheric Steam • All steam lines must be combined right before or at the distributor • Why? • Condensate from one unit may flow back into the other units resulting in an error • Multiple Units
Steam Line Installation Enlarging Steam Lines Atmospheric Steam • Steam lines can be over sized to compensate for longer steam runs • When enlarging or over sizing steam lines, ensure condensate is properly drained • Nortec steam hose • or copper pipe • Oversized copper • steam line
Steam Line Installation Condensate Line Sizing Atmospheric Steam • Individually trap condensate before • combining to common drain • Oversize main condensate line if combining multiple traps
Steam Line Installation Condensate Traps Atmospheric Steam • Full Size Tee Condensate Trap • Copper Tee • Minimum 6” drop to top of trap • Cap • Condensate Line • Minimum 6” or duct static pressure + 2”
Steam Line Installation Condensate Traps Atmospheric Steam 2 3 1 • Where to install condensate traps: • 1. Long steam runs • Trap every 15 – 20 ft. • 2. Horizontal to vertical transitions • 3. Distributors below humidifier • Trap at low points and at distributor
Steam Line Installation Horizontal to Vertical Transitions Atmospheric Steam
Steam Line Installation Horizontal to Vertical Transitions Atmospheric Steam • Full Size Copper Tee • Condensate Drain
Steam Line Installation Condensate Traps Atmospheric Steam Where would you use traps?

Review Atmospheric Steam • Atmospheric steam is NOT the same as pressure steam • Follow recommended materials, size and length • Insulate with 1” pipe insulation • Slope the steam lines • Min. 10° for upward slope • Min. 2° for downward slope • Trap condensate • Long steam runs - every 15 – 20 ft. • Horizontal to vertical transitions • Trap at low points and at distributor
