Ekklesia – an assembly, or people set apart • Church – baptized persons who profess the faith and teachings of Jesus Christ, who participate in his sacraments, and who obey the pastors whom he has appointed • Old Testament – anything pertaining to events before Jesus Christ under the Old Covenant • Covenant – An agreement, or promise between God and His people accompanied by a sign • New Testament – anything pertaining to events from the birth of Jesus Christ to now under the New Covenant
The Church Prefigured • Adam and Eve • Noah • Abraham • Moses • David
Adam and Eve: Family • In the promise made to Adam and Eve after the Fall • Gen 3:15 – The protoevangelium How do you think this prefigures the Church? • God promises an offspring that would destroy the power of Satan, this offspring is Jesus, who establishes the Church.
Covenant with Adam and Eve Established: between God and man (family) Scripture: Gen 1-2 / Gen 3:15 (protoevangelium) Command: “Be fruitful, multiply, subdue the earth” Sign: Marriage – Union between Man and woman
Noah: household 2. In the covenant God made with Noah and his household. • Gen. 9:7-9 – God renews the promise He made with Adam. God chooses Noah and his household and saves them. He gives them laws to live by. • How do we see the Church prefigured with Noah? • The Ark saves Noah and his household and is a symbol of the Church
Covenant with Noah • Established between: God and man (household) • Scripture: Gen 9:7-9 • Command: “Be fruitful, multiply, subdue the earth” • Sign: Rainbow
Abraham: Tribe 3. In the covenant made with Abraham and his tribe. • Gen. 15: 1-18 / 17:1-15 - The image of the Church becomes more clear through Abrahams great act of faith. God sets Abraham and his tribe apart and makes them his people so that they might become holy. • How do we see the Church? • Through the gift of faith
Covenant with Abraham • Established between God and Man (Tribe) • Scripture: Gen. 15:1-18 / Gen. 17:1-15 • Command: Abraham and his descendants must keep the Covenant throughout the ages • Sign: Circumcision
Moses: Nation • In the covenant with Moses and the nation of Israel. • Ex. 12:14 / Ex. 19:1-8 / Ex. 20:1-17: The image of the Church becomes more clear through Moses: • Renews promise with the nation of the Jews • Moral Code – Ten Commandments • Formal ceremonies of worship • Calls Israel “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people set apart.”
Covenant with Moses • Established: between God and man (Nation) • Scripture: Gen. 12:14 / 19:1-8 / 20:1-17 • Command: Keep my covenant and you shall be my special possession • Sign: Ten Commandments / Sacrificial Lamb (Passover)
David: Kingdom 5. In the covenant God made with King David. • 2 Samual 7:8-16 – God renews his promise with David and promises to protect his line and that his kingdom shall last forever. • Jesus fulfills this promise. He comes from the line of David and His kingdom will never end.
Covenant with David • Established: between God and Man (Kingdom) • Scripture: 2 Samual 7:8-16 • Command: Shepherd my people • (2 Samual 5:2) • Sign: The Throne / Temple
