The Hobbit Chapter 16: A Thief in the Night
Thorin becomes corrupt with greed! • As the dwarves (and Bilbo) are trapped in the mountain, Thorin becomes obsessed with finding the Arkenstone. Roac returns to report that Dain and “more than five hundred dwarves” are on their way from the Iron Hills to assist Thorin.
Bilbo takes off! • Fearing the outcome of the situation, Bilbo decides to leave: • He relieves Bombur from guard duty, and quickly escapes from the mountain. • Using the ring, he is able to venture toward the enemy camp unnoticed until he falls into the bed of a stream and is forced to reveal himself to the elf guards. • After taking off his ring, he demands to be taken to Bard.
Is Bilbo a traitor? • Bilbo meets with both Bard and the Elf King. • He reveals his contract with the dwarves, the dwarves’ intentions (including the impending arrival of Dain), as well as his possession of the Arkenstone. • In an attempt to negotiate a truce, he gives Bard and the Elf King possession of the coveted gem. • After wards, Bilbo decides to return to the mountain and the dwarves in hopes that his “bargaining chip” will speed along to current stalemate between the dwarves and their opposition.
Gandalf Returns! • As Bilbo begins his journey back to the mountain camp, Gandalf appears and congratulates him on his honorable behavior. • Finally, Bilbo returns to his “post” and wakes Bombur before going to sleep for the night.
