Student Expectations in the Classroom • Be prompt • Be ready to learn when class begins. • Be prepared • Write in your agendaand know due dates. • Be sure to have all materials needed for class to avoid losing Responsibility Points. • Be a problem solver • Turn in work on time, and always do your best. • Ask questions, go to Teacher MoodleSites, ask a friend.
ELA Curriculum Topics According to the Common Core Standards Writing • Personal Narrative • Research (Informational Text) • Argumentative (Combined Reading/Writing) • Poetry • Units may vary per class
ELA Curriculum Topics continued….. Reading • Reading and responding to the text is expected throughout the week. For Example: Reading Log, Journal Entry, Post it Work, and Projects • Please help us monitor your child’s choice of reading materials by level and content.
STEMS • A systematic study of vocabulary, focusing on Greek and Latin roots that are embedded in the words. • This is a cumulative study that students are assessed on every other week. • Students should study ALL STEMS CARDS to prepare for every test, not just the current list. • Only vocabulary from the current list will be assessed for every test.
Grammar • Students will be learning the eight parts of speech, with a focus on pronouns. • Students will be assessed periodically, and this too will be cumulative. • Students will be expected to use proper grammar and punctuation upon instruction.
Missed Assignments • Students are responsible for finding out their missed work when absent. Each teacher has a system in place on the procedure for submitting make-up work. • If a student is absent, they will have a total of two school days for EACH day absent. • Work that is not turned in after the allotted time, will result in a zero for the assignment. • Please check your teacher’s Moodle Site while absent to avoid falling further behind.
For more details…. • NCDPI and Common Core Standards can be read in depth online, taking you further into what your child is learning this year in Language Arts. • NCDPI provides released test question items, as well as common core resources and specific parent information. • www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy
