The Purpose of Music Videos Shane Blake
A music video is a series of clips placed over an artist’s piece of music; these may or may not be relevant to the lyrics of the song. In most examples, the artist will feature in the video. For entertainment purposes you cannot simply place a song on TV without a video, this would result in the audience losing interest, so a music video was created to give the song an identity, often music videos become more famous than the song and can become icons on their own and can extend the life of a certain track. They are no boundary’s to a music video, you can use live performances, narratives (storyline) a big example of this would be “Jesus of Suburbia” by Green Day. Most music videos use techniques such as miming/lip-syncing and. Definition
They are many purposes for music videos, these can range from the extension of outlets to exhibit artists or music channel such as MTV and VH1 and even the internet through the use of YouTube, Social Networking e.g. MySpace band profiles. And Viral marketing, a popular example of viral marking is the song “Here it goes again” by OK Go which features the bands on treadmills, a simple but entertaining concept. One ground-breaking revolution of the music video through the distribution of TV is that it allows the performer/artist to be seen around the world without them having to physically be there, this can be essential as artists cannot be in many locations at once, for example The Beatles released video recordings of their studio sessions and released them to television networks to allow fans in all four corners of the globe to watch. Purpose of a Music VideoTV and Internet
Bands and Record labels can often use music videos as a way of promoting bands or artists to create an image or if you will an identity style whilst creating an album that links to a target audience. The target audience is what the product is aimed at, such as age/gender/interests. This enables them to create a fan-base which can be used to promote a tour. An example of this would be the group Take That, they relied on their fan base and their image when they started out in the 1990’s, to become successful. They also used Music videos as a way to create their identity. PURPOSE OF A MUSIC VIDEOartists and promotion
The Synergistic Marketing Strategy is when a song is major part of the film soundtrack. Music contains footage from film-cross promotion of both industries. Synergy means two or more brands coming together to promote to broaden target audience an example of this would be the song “new divide” by Linkin Park, the songs music video feature clips from the film Transformers 2. It is essentially cross promotion as a general idea. This can also be a very good way to get a band or song known. SYNERGISTIC Marketing Strategy
Music Videos are used as marketing tools, linking into band merchandise and other products depending on the specific record label. Major record labels will give a high budget to try to create a popular image as this will lead to sales which equal success and production values. However with self-promotion through unsigned bands, this enables the band to be free of the record label criteria and are able to shoot their own video. Music video as a marketing tool
