Types of tertiary schools(higher education) • 2 year community college or Junior college (Associate degree) • 4 year college (Bachelor’s degree, some Master’s) • University (Bachelor’s, Master’s, Doctorate) ----------------------------- • Public: State colleges/universities • Private
FUNDING • State taxes (Public only) • Student tuition • Research grants (from foundations, corporations, government) • Private donations (alumni, friends, corporations) • Corporate donations
Credit system • 1 credit = 50 minutes in class x 15 • credit =contact hour=credit hour=hour • 15 contact hours per semester • Typical course: 3 credits = 45 contacts hrs/semester • Homework: 1 hour in class + 2 hrs. of homework
Bachelor’s degree • 120 credits • 30 credits/year = 15 credits/semester = 5 courses per semester or 10 per year • 2 years: general education • 2 years: specialization MAJOR (~30-45 credits) MINOR (~12-15 credits) -------------------- • Includes required courses and electives, both in general education and the specialization. • Student should decide major by 3rd year.
