Recent Events • Two events in the Washington, DC area reinforced the importance of incorporating telework into emergency planning • February 2010 Snowstorms • April 2010 Nuclear Security Summit • Telework should be part of a suite of flexibilities used to create a mobile workforce
Telework and Emergency Planning • Telework should be a part of all emergency planning • Management must be committed to implementing remote work arrangements as broadly as possible and ensure that: • Equipment, technology and technical support have been tested • Employees are comfortable with technology and communications methods • Managers re comfortable managing a distributed workgroup
Telework and Emergency Planning (cont.) • Agency telework policies should include information on what is expected from teleworkers in the event of an emergency situation • All telework-eligible employees should have a telework agreement, in particular individuals who are asked to telework in an emergency • Individuals expected to telework in emergency situations should practice teleworking on a regular basis as much as possible
