  1. MATRICULATION PROGRAMS IN 2009 BANKSTOWN COLLEGE OF TAFE

  2. There are two separate matriculation programs at Bankstown College of TAFE: • The Higher School Certificate (HSC), which is issued by the Board of Studies • The Tertiary Preparation Certificate (TPC), which is issued by TAFE

  3. Common factors for both the HSC and the TPC • Both offer a Year 12 qualification. • Both can be done on a part-time or full-time basis. • Both can be accumulated over several years. • Both will give you a Universities Admissions Index (UAI) score or equivalent, to get you to university.

  4. The Higher School Certificate (HSC) • The HSC can be done in a variety of different modes: • Year 11 and 12 in one year. • Accumulation of subjects over 2 to 5 years. • Limited UAI: 5 – 9 units. • HSC Evening program. • Year 11 – ESL program: one year of intensive language work, in preparation for either the HSC or TPC.

  5. (a) Year 11 and 12 in one year • Students do 10 units at Year 12 level and 12 units at Year 11 level. (10 units are sufficient, if the student has already the Preliminary requirements.) • Gives the HSC and a UAI. • Not available to those who have only just completed Year 10 at school.

  6. (b) Accumulation of the HSC over 2 to 5 years: • Three subjects is deemed as full-time (18 hours of classes per week). • Gives the HSC and a UAI.

  7. (c) Limited UAI • 5-9 units, done in one year. • English is compulsory. • Does not offer an HSC, but does give a limited UAI (which will get you into most university courses). The LUAI is calculated from at least one of your English units plus your four best other units. • The HSC can be completed the following year, to give a full UAI. • You must be 20 on March 1st of the year you sit.

  8. (d) HSC Evening program • Limited subject choice (7only). • Students may only complete a full HSC over 2 or more years (on an accumulation basis). • A LUAI can be done in one year.

  9. (e) Year 11 – ESL program • Year 11 only in 2009, for students with language difficulties • Full-time or part-time • All subjects are language-oriented, and delivered by ESL teachers • Limited range of subjects (6 only) • Gives access to the HSC or TPC

  10. Subjects – Year 11 and 12 in one year • English ESL Day only • Standard English Day and evening • Advanced English Day only

  11. General Maths Day only • 2 Unit Maths Day and evening • Extension 1 Maths Day only • Extension 2 Maths (Year 12 only) Evening only • IP & T Day only • IT – VET Day only • Software Design and Development Evening only

  12. Biology Day only • Chemistry Day and evening • Physics Day and evening • Senior Science Day only

  13. Modern History Day only • Geography Day only • Society and Culture Day only • Studies of Religion Day only • Legal Studies Evening only • Ancient History Evening only

  14. Other subjects: • Subjects may be done in the evening at other colleges. Timetables are available from the HSC coordinator. • Subjects may also be done via correspondence : - OTEN offers its subjects in one and two year mode. - Sydney Distance Education High School and the Saturday School of Community Languages offer all of their subjects in two year mode (ie. Preliminary in 2009 and HSC in 2010).

  15. Other information… • If you repeat a subject for the HSC, UAC counts the mark you got in your second attempt when calculating the UAI. • Students in TAFE are expected to fit into an adult learning environment. Poor behaviour will not be tolerated. • Teachers will be on hand to help you with your subject choices at the time of enrolment. • If you are under 18 years of age, please bring proof of age, your School Certificate and school reports to the interview.

  16. Costs • Administrative charges • $670 for a full HSC in one year • $428 for part-time study (4 subjects or less) • $50 for anyone on government benefits • The above fees are refundable upon completion of the HSC, as long as the entire course is done in TAFE. • Other charges: - $40 materials charge (non-refundable). - Textbooks may need to be purchased ($50 per subject).

  17. The Tertiary Preparation Certificate (TPC) • TPC is a TAFE alternative to the HSC, especially aimed at mature aged students. • It gives you a Tertiary Entrance Score that can be used for University entry. • It can be done as a one year full time course (20 hours per week), or part-time over 2 or 3 years. • You must be 18 or over to do the course.

  18. Cost: $910 for full-time; $670 for part-time. • All fees are refundable upon completion of the course. • $20 per semester materials charge. • TPC information session is on Friday 30th January at 10 am and 5 pm in E5.04. • The TPC course co-ordinator is Peter Boyle.   19. Other aspects of the TPC • More emphasis on skills than the HSC; less content. • More project-style assessment; no big end of year exams. • All subjects are one semester only. • Total of 9 subjects needed to complete the course • Tertiary Entrance Score calculated from three of your higher level subjects.

  20. When to enrol • For the HSC: • an application and testing session will be held on Tuesday, January 27th, at 1:00 pm, in E3.02 and 5:00 pm in JLG7. • if there is no strike, another session will be held on Wednesday the 28th, at 10:00 am in E3.02. • There will also be sessions on Friday 30th, at 10:00 am in E3.02 and 5:30 in JLG7. • For the TPC: - application and testing sessions will be held on Friday 30th January, at 10:00 am and 5:30 pm in E5.04.
