Postdoctoral Fellowships • currently offering up to 45 awards each year • tenable for three years • experience of independent research • introduction to teaching • career development • output and dissemination
Postdoctoral Fellowships Eligibility • Any EEA national • Anyone of any nationality with UK doctorate • Doctorate awarded between April 2014 and April 2017 • Agreed support from UK university as host
Postdoctoral Fellowships • Annual competition • 2-stage application process • Deadline for outline applications expected October 2016 • Shortlist announced before February • Final awards announced in May • Awards to be taken up from Sep 2017 • High priority scheme
Newton International Fellowships • Early career postdoctoral applicants from any foreign country to conduct research at a UK institution • Two-year full-time fellowships • Stipend, research expenses, relocation cost, alumni funding • 50% host institution overhead contribution • Additional funding for Newton Fund Countries • Electronic application via RS e-Gap system • Deadline for next call - tbc
BA/Leverhulme Small Research Grants • Very popular scheme, funded from public funds, Leverhulme Trust and around twenty other funding sources • Awards up to £10k, tenable for up to 24 months • Commonly used for pilot studies, small-scale projects • Worldwide in scope, international partners • High priority in Academy portfolio • Call for proposals expected for deadline in October 2016 for awards starting from 1 April 2017

British Academy Monographs Since 1998 the British Academy has produced a series of monographs that has provided an excellent publishing opportunity and showcase for BA Postdoctoral Fellows. From 2015 the series has also been open to Newton International Fellows. Proposals considered twice a year (next deadline expected July/August)
British Academy Conferences A meeting of minds – help shape the future of your field with the UK’s national academy for the humanities and social sciences. NB Not an offer of funding – conferences must be planned to happen in the BA building
Evaluation Criteria For all awards: • academic merit • originality of proposal • relationship to and volume of research already in the field • feasibility of research programme • specificity of scheme of research • intended outcomes
Evaluation Criteria Research Posts: additional factors: • For PDFs: potential to go on to a successful academic career as a teacher in higher education • For BARSEAs: quality and interest of the engagement proposed; numbers of people expected to benefit; feasibility of the timetable and organisation of the engagement, the likelihood of other activity developing
Peer Review • assessment procedures proportionate to scale of funding • subject specialists within Academy • for international grants, may also use area specialists • recommendations confirmed by Award Committees, in light of budget available • Code of Practice for all assessors
