2 Introduction • Students in COMP 4923 Green IT at Acadia University • Partnered with Armour Transport Ltd to conduct research and gather data to prepare a department audit analysis • Goal: Conduct department audit to assess the impact of computers and related peripherals on the environment in terms of energy use and consumables • To help determine the impact of computer technology on our carbon footprint at Acadia University

5 Audit Process • Armour Transport Ltd located in Kentville, Nova Scotia was the department we chose to conduct our audit report • We met with Chris Walker, an employee at Armour Transport Ltd to discuss the process of auditing desktops and peripherals in the department • We gathered information on eight desktops, three printers, two fax machines and two photocopiers
6 Audit Process Con’t • The data that was collected from the Pre and Post-Audit interview was then analyzed and recorded to determine the estimated weekly and yearly costs of the department’s computing resources • Analysis was also used to provide helpful recommendations on ways to assist their department on becoming Green Friendly
7 Analysis • All fifteen devices are located in the office building at Armour Transport Ltd. • Primary users are administrative staff at Armour Transport Ltd • All staff have regular access to desktop computers • Computers’ operating systems include Windows XP Professional • All computers are backed up over the network to the head department • Norton Symantic Antivirus program is used on all desktops • Most peripherals are shared amongst employees
8 Analysis • Total KWH used per year 74489.20 • Total KWH needed per year 28910.40 • Total device cost per year for KWH used $4,603.43 • Total device cost per year for KWH needed $1,786.66 • Approximately 320000 pieces of paper are used per year • Printer toner is replaced 14 times per year

Recommendations • Fully shutting down all equipment after use each day • Updating old technology with newer technology • Applying energy saving settings to every desktop • Use all-in-one copiers to replace printers, faxes, scanners and photo copiers
