October 3, 2011Bell Assignment • On a CLEAN sheet of paper, make a list of EVERYTHING you know about the writing process. Consider the following questions as you make your list: • What do you do when you are given a prompt? • What order of steps do you go through when you write? • What are some important things to remember while writing an essay? • What does the word “expository” mean in relation to writing?
Responses – 1st period • 5 paragraph model (Intro, 3 body, Conclusion) • Make a plan (chart or a map) • Answer the prompt • Rough draft • Never use “I” or “you” (personal pronouns) – formal essays • Don’t speak directly to the reader • SACSEED, RAFTS • Use transitional words • Use GOOD vocabulary • Don’t repeat yourself over and over again • Don’t number paragraph (Secondly) • Conclusion restates your thesis (main idea)
Responses – 2nd period • Write the prompt in the introduction • Have an attention grabber • Don’t start with a question; Don’t start with onomatopoeia • Decide what kind of writing (persuasive, expository, etc.) • SACSEED, AAAWWUBBIS (Sentence starters with a comma) • Plan before writing • Stay on topic • Know when to add details and when to make a point • Use transition words • Thesis statement in Intro; restate in the conclusion • Formal essay: DO NOT use personal pronouns (I, you, me)
Responses – 6th period • READ the prompt – a few times – 4-6 • Make a graphic organizer to plan out your writing • Several ideas – ready in case something doesn’t quite fit • *Put prepositional phrases at the end of the main idea • Good vocabulary • Don’t use personal pronouns (I, you, me, my) [formal essays] • Don’t be repetitive • STAY on topic • AAAWWUBBIS – As, After, Although, While, When, Until, Before, Because, If, Since (start sentences) • SACSEED – Similes, Anecdotes, Cause/Effect, Statistics, Expert, Example, Details/Definition • Don’t start with AND, BUT, or BECAUSE • Specific • Write an author’s last name only • CLEAR thesis (main idea)
Responses – 7th period • Don’t start sentences with AND or BUT • Don’t end a sentence with a preposition (to, of) • Make a plan – bubble maps, charts, bulleted lists • Don’t use contractions (don’t=do not) [formal] • Have good segways • Indent paragraphs • AAAWWUBBIS - As, After, Although, While, When, Until, Before, Because, If, Since (start sentences) • Don’t be too blunt “In this essay I will tell you about…” • Avoid cliché transitions (first, second, third) • No “I believe, I think, I say” • Stay on topic
Announcements/Reminders • TOMORROW you will be writing a timed essay to a prompt from the county (DA writing) • Turn in your Voc. List 2 assignments tomorrow (remember: one assignment works with the words’ definitions; one assignment shows the words in context of a sentence!) • HW for this week: Ch. 11-13 due by WEDNESDAY this week. In your agenda book, write WHEN you will read your chapters (either tonight or tomorrow night).
TFA Ch. 5-10 Reflection – 10/3/2011 On a clean sheet of paper in your TFA section, write roughly a PARAGRAPH for each of the following: • Out of all the events you’ve read about in Ch. 5-10, which one was the most shocking to you? Which one stood out? Explain why. • What does Chapter 10 show about the system of justice in the community? What do you think about this? Is this an effective method of settling cases? • Ekwefi is Okonkwo’s second wife. Choose an adjective that best describes her and explain whyyou chose that adjective using evidence from the text.
October 4, 2011 • Turn in your TFA Voc. List 2 assignments to the class basket. • IMMEDIATELY take your seat and begin working on your DA expository writing based on the prompt you received at the door. • When you finish, turn in your essay to the class basket then READ quietly at your desk.
October 5, 2011Bell Assignment • On the NOTES you took Monday about the Writing Process, skip a line and write a reflection based upon these prompts: • What writing strategies did you use as you wrote your DA essay yesterday? Why? Do you think your essay turned out well? • What is most difficult for you when you write? Why? • What can you do next time we have a writing prompt in order to improve?
TFA Ch. 11-13 Reflection – 10/5/11 On your Ch. 5-10 Reflection sheet, skip a line and write a response for these prompts. • In Ch. 11, Ekwefi tells the fable of why the Tortoise’s shell is not smooth. What connections can you make from the characters in the FABLE to our characters in the Ibo tribe? Are there any similar personality traits or any events that seem to relate? Explain. • In Ch. 12, the tribe is preparing for a wedding, In Ch. 13, the tribe is conducting a funeral. What cultural customs stood out to you in the way the tribe conducted these ceremonies? Why? THEN, create TITLES for Ch. 11, 12, 13 on the title worksheet you received on Friday last week.

Magazine Advertisement Analysis • What does the word ANALYSIS mean? • So, what do you think we will do with a magazine advertisement?
Magazine Advertisement Analysis • Question for Consideration: • How do the media (magazines, TV, billboards, web ads) portray females/males in OUR culture? • How does this connect to our novel? • What have we already done with this topic?
Magazine Advertisement Analysis • Procedure: • Select an ad in a magazine • Cut out the ad • Determine what the ad is trying to sell • Break down the pieces of the ad and describe them on your chart • Main Image • Background • Text • Then, EVALUATE how what you LITERALLY see can be INTERPRETED. What does this ad “say” to the audience about what it means to be a male or female? How did you come to that conclusion? • Next, write a SUMMARY paragraph (on your own paper) about the descriptions to made in the “Describe” column. • Finally, write a REFLECTION paragraph based on the notes you made in the EVALUATION column.

On the back of the chart, write a response to the following: • What magazines do you have at home that you can look through for advertisements? (Essentially, what resources do you have?) • Did any particular brand’s advertisements pop into mind as you were listening to the instructions? • Assignment is due on FRIDAY, Oct. 7.
Homework for tonight • TFA Vocabulary List 3 context clue chart • Answer columns TWO and FOUR (Have I heard this before? and Possible Definition). Use context clues to determine the new word’s meaning. We will get “official” definitions tomorrow. • Reminder: TFA Part Two (Ch. 14-19, 40 pages) due MONDAY (one reading log for this part)
