Warm Up Questions • Do you know the terms biotic and abiotic? If not, look them up & be ready to tell me the difference! • Why/how does it take energy to get energy?
Chapter 15 Notes 4-29-14
Major points from section 1 • Oceanography – study of Earth’s oceans • Satellites, sonar, etc. used to explore the ocean • Scientists hypothesize water may have come from impacting comets or deep within Earth’s interior( & released by volcanoes) • Major Oceans: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic, & Antarctic
Oceans Information • 1. Pacific – largest, deepest • 2. Atlantic – second largest • 3. Indian – third largest • Arctic (north) & Antarctic (south) – have lots of sea ice
Chemical Properties of Seawater • Seawater contains 3.5% dissolved salts (mostly NaCl) • Salinity – measure of salt content or amount of dissolved salts • Stays constant because salts are removed and added at a consistent rate (removed by: formation of evaporites & biological processes & replenished by: volcanic eruptions, and weathering & erosion)
Physical Properties of Seawater • Denser than freshwater due to dissolved ions • Also, colder water is more dense so the bottom of the ocean has colder water • Remember D = m/v • Blue light penetrates farthest in the water and red light penetrates least deep (see pg. 396) • Freezing point of salt water lower than freshwater due to dissolved ions
Ocean Layering • Surface layer – warmest • Thermocline – transitional layer • Bottom layer – coldest
REMINDER • Chapter 15, section 3 information was presented by me writing on the SMART board and by videos….you are responsible for getting caught up if you were absent!
