News from activities @ LouvainK. Piotrzkowski (UCL) Photoproduction studies M. Van Der Donckt, J. de Favereau & T. Pierzchala Cold detector for the Roman Pots O. Militaru & X. Rouby Luminosity with very forward e+e- pairs in CASTOR D. Bocian (CERN/Krakow) & KP
Cold Modules Otilia Militaru, Xavier Rouby + RD39 • First prototype being tested at low (cryogenic) temperatures! Will continue the development: test full chain at low temperatures (including readout chain); built more modules with various sensor shapes; test them at the beam and verify radiation hardness CERN forward meeting, 24/9/2004
Photoproduction studies Muriel Van Der Donckt • First studies of WH production in photon-proton interactions - very interesting cross-section at the LHC of about 23 fb! • See first presentations during the Higgs reviews next week Wednesday and Thursday (Higgs mtg) • Next report expected for the November CPT week Jérôme de Favereau, Tomek Pierzchala • Study of the anomalous WW production in gg interactions and single W production in gp • Detailed report planned for the November meeting CERN forward meeting, 24/9/2004
pp Luminosity Excellent QED process for luminosity monitoring pp pp e+e- Electrons are in forward range Cross section ~barns Tracking important! EM calorimetry essential Can get the luminosity to 1-2%? So far > 5% from W,Z production, (or via optical theorem at very low luminosity) small angles of few mrad high rates of few kHz background! s varies strongly with pair energy CERN forward meeting, 24/9/2004
Forward e+e- pairs in ion collisions at the LHC Recent studies: Consider use for luminosity monitoring in ion collisions at the LHC - Accepted for publication in Acta Phys. Pol. High rates for e+e- pairs within the CASTOR acceptance CERN forward meeting, 24/9/2004 Excellent candidate for the luminosity measurement for ion collisions
pp luminosity Try to get first estimate on the sytematics: sensitivity to energy scale + resolutions Energy resolution seems to be not too critical CERN forward meeting, 24/9/2004
pp luminosity II Energy scale should be well under control using the p0 events in CASTOR! CERN forward meeting, 24/9/2004
CASTOR simulation/plans So far only ideal case assumed: geometrical acceptance + gaussian smearing (no dead material) -DE = 20-30%E and Dx = 0.5-1 mm The effect of solenoid field in CMS is not too bad; results will be reported in November. Continue studies on the pp case with CASTOR; aim for publication this year - more in November CERN forward meeting, 24/9/2004
