  2. Overall Details of Animal Farm • Rebellion was suppose to make life easier for all of the animals • Life was worse in the end • The pigs become the same or worse than Mr. Jones

  3. Overall Details of the Russian Revolution • Intended to solve problems from Czar • Life was even worse after the revolution • Stalin made the czar look like a nice guy

  4. Animal Farm • Mr. Jones • Irresponsible to his animals---lets them starve • Sometimes cruel—beats them with the whip • Sometimes kind---mixes milk with food

  5. Russian Revolution • Czar Nicholas II • A poor leader at best • Cruel---sometimes brutal with opponents • Sometimes kind---hired students as spies to make money

  6. Animal Farm • Old Major • Taught Animalism • “Rebellion”---overthrow Man and become rich and free • Dies before the revolution takes place

  7. Russian Revolution • Karl Marx • Invented Communism • “Workers of the World Unite!”—take over the government • Dies before the Russian Revolution

  8. Animal Farm • Animalism • No owners—no rich and no poor • Workers get a better life • All animals are equal • Everyone owns the farm

Russian Revolution • Propaganda • The spreading of ideas, information, or rumor for the purpose of helping or injuring an institution, a cause, or a person • Worked for Stalin to support his image • Used any lie to convince the people to follow Stalin • Benefited from the fact that education was controlled

  16. Animal Farm • The Dogs • A private army that used fear to force the animals to work • Killed or intimidated any opponent of Napoleon • Another part of Napoleon’s strategy to control the animals

  17. Russian Revolution • KGB-Secret Police • Not actual police, but forced support for Stalin • Used brutal force • Often killed entire families for disobedience • Totally loyal to Lenin • More powerful than the army

  18. Animal Farm • Moses the Raven • Tells the animals about Sugar Candy Mountain (Heaven) • Animals can go to SCM if they work hard • Snowball and Major were against him—they thought Heaven was a lie to make animals work • Napoleon let him stay because he taught animals to work and not complain

  19. Russian Revolution • Russian Orthodox Church • Marx said religion is an, “opiate of the people.” (a drug/lie) • It is used to make people work and not complain • Stalin knew religion would stop violent revolution

  21. Russian Revolution • Russia’s upper class and those in the world who didn’t care • Some people didn’t care about revolution • Only thought about themselves • Went to other countries that offered more for them

  22. Animal Farm • Boxer • Strong, hard-working horse • Believes in Animal Farm • “Napoleon is always right” • “I will work harder” • Gives all and is betrayed by Napoleon

  24. Animal Farm • Benjamin • Old wise donkey who is suspicious of the rebellion • Thinks, “nothing ever changes” • He is the only animal other than the pigs who can read • Realizes what’s being done to Boxer

  25. Russian Revolution • Skeptical people in Russia and the rest of the world • Did not believe that a revolution would bring about real long-term change • Knew that Communism wouldn’t work with power hungry leaders
