  1. mg/L - milligrams per litre (10-3 g per litre) = mg per 1,000,000mg THUS = ppm μ g/L - micrograms per litre (10-6 g per litre) = ug per 1,000,000,000 ug THUS = ppb Q- A sample of blood has 10μ g of lead per 100mL. What is this concentration in ppm? 1- Work out how many μg in 1L There are 10 X 100 mL in 1L. So there will be 10 X 10μg in 1L. =100μg /L 2- Convert this to mg per L (ppm) 1 mg = 10-3g. 1 μg =10-6g. So there are 1000 μg in 1 mg. So 100μg = 0.1 mg So the concentration is 0.1mg /L = 0.1 ppm

  2. Q – A 10g sample of tissue has 0.0032 mg of mercury. Express this as ppm. • 1- work out how many mg in 1000g This is ppm as 1000g = 1,000,000 mg There are 100 X 10g in 1kg. So there are 100 x 0.0032 mg in 1kg. = 0.32 mg in every kg = 0.32ppm
