Ultimate! Offensive and Defensive Strategies By: Mr. Nowlan & Ms. Lee
Offensive Strategies • Players can employ many different offensive strategies with different goals. • Most strategies aim to create open lanes on the field for the receiver. • We will learn the 2 most common offensive Ultimate strategies: Vertical Stack & Horizontal Stack
Vertical Stack Pick lane Fake and attack Catch or clear • 5 cutters • 2 handlers act as quarterbacks • Goal to create 3 open passing lanes • Last person in stack is only one who moves • Go back into formation if you do not get a pass • Don’t cut from middle of stack
HorizontalStack • 3 handlers spread across field • 4 lane cutters • Keep good spacing between the sideline and middle of the field • Rest on the sidelines and do most of your cutting in the middle • Cut • Look for the disk • Catch or clear
Defensive Strategies • In Ultimate Frisbee, it has been said that defense makes the game. • When playing defense, every single person on the team must be performing at their highest level, or the whole team unit is vulnerable. • We will learn the 2 most common defensive strategies in Ultimate Frisbee: man-to-man defense and zone defense.
Man-To-Man • Man-to-man defense is the most basic type of defense. • Each person on the defending team chooses a person on the opposite team, and does his or her best to prevent the person from catching the disc, or from throwing the disc to another receiver. • This involves constant sprinting, and after a long game this type of defense can break down and cost a less athletic team the game.
Zone Defense • Zone defense is more practical and useful for a number of reasons. • Zone allows each person on the defensive team to cover an area of the field, as opposed to one specific person. • The defense therefore does not have to run as much, and a team with decent "field sense" can use the zone with a more efficient expenditure of energy.
Conclusion Defensive Strategies • Man-to-man • Zone Offensive Strategies • Vertical Stack • Horizontal Stack HAVE FUN! BE FAIR! PLAY SAFE!
