2. Profile: Meet the family… Name: Naizen Hallestrøm Nationality: Swedish/Japanese, born in Stockholm, currently living in Australia Age: 19 Gender: Male Employment status: Was employed up till January 17th where upon he was made redundant. Currently unemployed. Family: Father is a wealthy Swedish property owner, Sven Hallestrøm, his mother a little known, but very prominent, Japanese philanthropist, Etsuko Hallestrøm. Neither parent is home regularly or for extended periods of time, although his mother makes conscious efforts to spend as much time with Naizen as possible. Several times now, he has run away from home, only to return several days later, each time to the bewilderment of his mother, who repeatedly states that he “Always seems happy, he goes to kendo, rock-climbing, judo and karate. He has lots of friends. I just don’t understand…” and housekeeper. His father refuses to comment on the matter. His grades are a direct reflection of the band five and six student that left high school. Etsuko Naizen Sven

4. Direct Contacts - Microsystem Mother – Etsuko: Sometimes at home, attempts to show affection for her son Father – Sven: Rarely at home, only sees his son as another part of his business relations and has little time to spare for him. Housekeeper: Always around when Naizen is home. Has become a surrogate parent/sibling for Naizen. With a Shinto mother and a deeply committed Christian father, religion has rarely entered Naizen’s life. Considers himself agnostic. At university, maintaining a ‘Distinction’ level average. Has few friends.

5. Connections - Exosystem Mother’s working schedule is fluid, never certain if she will be home at any given time or not. Usually overseas. No siblings with which to talk to or spend time with. Constantly alone at home or with a small number of people at various sporting events. Father is constantly working. Rarely home before Naizen has gone to bed, usually gone before he wakes up. Never has time to spend with his family. Naizen’s time is broken up between going to the training sessions for his four sporting activities, University, the occasional running away and traveling between the various locations. Spends very little time with people he feels any kinship or friendship towards or attempting to develop such bonds.

6. Global Factors - Mesosystem Australian values: The changing values of Australian society affects the way in which Karate can be practiced and the methods used. Bi-cultural heritage: His family’s interests in global affairs such as the Global Recession are increased given their differing backgrounds, Sweden and Japan. University: The cost of resources for students, such as books (for most subjects) and uniforms (with regards to Degrees such as Nursing), have increased, particularly if they are made or written in America, or by Americans. Australian Law: Prevents the carrying of any weapon without special licensing. Make it expensive to train for/in Kendo

7. The Clock - Chronosphere At nineteen, Naizen is subject to various subcultures, not in the least being his University subculture. A greater sense of commitment and dedication is placed upon, generally, a group of people who have gone from being told what and how and when to do things, to an environment that only provides the When. Added to this, the sudden change in the range of ages that Naizen is subjected to, the prospect of ‘getting older’ is constantly at the back of his mind. The seemingly haphazard organisation of the University timetable, some people wandering campus, other leaving, others arriving, still others heading to class, the great mass of chronological confusion is often as confronting as the sudden requirement to be an Adult.
