What’s on the Test Mr. Callow? • The Final is made up of the following: • 5 Multiple Choice • 10 Matching • 4 Short Answer Conceptual • 6 or 7 Word Problems • 1 Essay
Mr. Callow, what will we be tested on? • The test covers the following topics: • Electricity • Electric Circuits • Magnetism • Light • Modern Physics
Electricity • Here are the basics for Electricity: • Electricity is split into sections: • Electric Force • Electric Field • Electric Potential Energy • Electric Potential • Electric Field is a region of space around a charge that will exert a force on any charge that enters that region. It is a vector quantity. • Electric Potential Energy is similar to the potential energy we discussed earlier in the year. It is energy that an object can convert into kinetic energy to move. • Electric Potential is a region of space around a charge that will give potential energy to any charge that enters that region. It is a scalar quantity.
Electricity • Know and have all the equations for this section written down. • Electric Fields always point toward negative charges and point away from positive charges. • Opposites attract in terms of charge. • Objects will move toward an area of lower potential if they are allowed to move freely. • It takes work to move an object from a lower potential to a higher potential.
Electric Circuits • Here are the basics for Circuits: • A circuit works on three basic ideas: • The charges are pushed (Voltage) • The charges’ speed can be measured (Current) • The charges’ speed can be controlled/slowed down (Resistance) • V = IR. Know it, love it. • Capacitors are used to store electric potential energy and release it very quickly at a moment’s notice. • Know and write down all equations for this section. • Current stays the same in series circuits, voltage stays the same in parallel circuits. • Know how to find the equivalent resistance or capacitance.
Magnetism • Here are the basics for Magnetism: • There are two types of magnetic force: • Force felt by a moving charge • Force felt by a wire • Know and write down all equations for magnetism. • Know how to do the right hand rule. • A charge can feel a magnetic force and an electric force at the same time. • Like charges, opposites attract. • Magnetic Force causes circular motion. • Know how a magnetic field can be created.
Light • Here are the basics for light: • There is two ways light can be affected by a surface: • Reflection • Refraction • Know and write down all equations for light. • When a light ray refracts, the frequency does not change. The speed and wavelength do. • There are three types of mirrors. Know how to draw a ray diagram for all of them: • Flat • Concave • Convex • There are two types of lenses. Know how to draw a ray diagram for all of them: • Converging • Diverging
Modern Physics • For this section of the quarterly it will be important to discuss the main idea of your project as well as a few of your classmate’s projects…
