Purpose • Provide update on progress of work plans for two Working Groups initiated since last Council meeting and Information Management initiative • Canadian Service Description Markup Language Working Group • Pan Canadian Registry Proof of Concept Working Group • IM Initiative PSCIOC Meeting February 14, 2005
Review of key Objectives of XML Subcommittee Objectives • Leverage the capabilities of national XML/Information Management standards in enabling inter-jurisdictional service delivery • Pilot Pan Canadian Registry as the hub for sharing national standards and reference models across jurisdictions PSCIOC Meeting February 14, 2005
Hi-lights of Progress (since Oct 04) • CSDML Working Group • Developing Version 1 of CSDML including requirement analysis, architecture design based on Proof of Concept work done in 2003-04 • Identified 3 inter-jurisdictional applications: i.e. CBSC, eContact, Collaborative Senior’s Portal • Aligning CSDML with reference models PSRM and GSRM • Pan Canadian Registry Working Group • Completed setup ebXML registry in Ottawa • Completed agreement with Sun to provide the same setup in Toronto • Loaded CPSIN data dictionary into registry • Loaded sample schemas and WSDL specifications PSCIOC Meeting February 14, 2005
Hi-lights of Progress (since Oct. 04) • Winner of national and international recognitions, • Finalist in Enterprise Architecture Excellence Award (from Zachman Institute for Framework Advancement) • Winner of CIO Government Review eAward in the category of “Raising the Bar across the jurisdictions” (IT World) • Engage and align with other subgroups such as Privacy, Information Security, ISD and IAA work groups • Engaged NSCIP, Privacy and IAA subcommittees as part of strategic knitting through communication and representations PSCIOC Meeting February 14, 2005
Information Management Initiative • Provide the forum for restarting the discussions on IMF, IM Burning Issues and Action Plan • Facilitated by Nunavut with wide participation across jurisdictions and disciplines • Inter-jurisdictional Consultations (Federal departments, Provincial/Territorial, Municipal) • Draft discussion paper and presentation by Nunavut provides basis for Council meeting on Feb 16 PSCIOC Meeting February 14, 2005
CSDML Working Group • Goal: to further develop the standard service description vocabulary based on XML and identify potential applications in member jurisdictions • Deliverables: a service discovery schema using Canadian Service Description Markup Language (CSDML) for CBSC implementation (service delivery capabilities planned) • Project lead: Jane Stewart of Industry Canada • Funding requirement: none required, CBSC schema development funded by Federal government PSCIOC Meeting February 14, 2005

Pan Canadian Registry Working Group • Goal: setup an interjurisdictional, distributed Registry based on ebXML (ISO 11179) standards and investigate its ability to support a variety of specifications in support of Pan Canadian standardization including governance and funding issues • Deliverables: an operational national Registry to be hosted in Ottawa by PWGSC with imported CSDML, Canada Public Safety Information Network (CPSIN) and Ontario’s Common Data Elements Schema (CDES) PSCIOC Meeting February 14, 2005
Pan Canadian Registry Working Group (cont’d) • Project lead: Ed Buchinski of Treasury Board Secretariat, with PWGSC as a major contributing partner to the project • Funding requirement: mostly funded by Federal government, additional $50,000 received from PSCIOC to research and develop the distributed registry capability including the importing/exporting of artifacts to Registry by project participants PSCIOC Meeting February 14, 2005
Pan Canadian Registry PoC Project (cont’d) • Major milestones: • Work plan completion – September, 04 • Functional requirements definition – October, 04 • Setup & configure Registry (Ottawa) – November, 04 • Setup & configure Registry (Toronto) – January, 05 • Import into Registry (CSDML, CDES)– January, 05 • Prototype Registry in Community Of Interest environment by participating jurisdictions – February - March, 05 • Test Registry replication between Ottawa, Toronto locations, February - March, 05 • Document findings – April, 05 • Present findings – May, 05 PSCIOC Meeting February 14, 2005
Inter-jurisdictional Applications for CSDML and Registry • CBSC/COBSC implementation based on CSDML and Registry • eContact will be CSDML compliant and based on a subset of CBSC schema • Senior’s Portal Phase 2 (based on CSDML and Information Models) • Potential applications: • Business Gateway use of CSDML being investigated by Industry Canada • Register Security vocabulary based on IAA in Registry (future) • Register Open Source Software shared code in Registry (future) PSCIOC Meeting February 14, 2005
Next Steps • Continue to develop CSDML and apply in inter-jurisdictional applications (CBSC, eContact) • Continue to test the Federated Registry architecture based on ebXML standards • Align CSDML with GSRM (Service patterns from TBS) • Continue to support and collaborate with related IM initiatives with Councils • Report project results and findings at Lac Carling 9 PSCIOC Meeting February 14, 2005

Glossary • CPSIN – Canada Public Safety Information Network is an XML based data standard developed by Solicitor General Canada, the Registry will import and publish CPSIN standards to all subscribed users in pilot mode • ebXML – Electronic Business XML is an international standard for conducting eBusiness and eGovernment transactions, the Registry is based on the set of standards for formatting its data contents as well as establishing access protocols for member use PSCIOC Meeting February 14, 2005
Glossary (cont’d) • CSDML – Canadian Service Description Markup Language is an XML based vocabulary being proposed as a national standard for describing Programs and Services • CBSC – Canada Business Service Centres are a federal-provincial initiative providing information to businesses, operating in all provinces and territories. The CBSC National Secretariat at Industry Canada provided the environment and funding for the 2004 CSDML proof of concept • BizPaL – On-line Business Permits and Licenses service PoC initiated by GoC with provincial and municipal participations; may utilize CSDML as base for defining services PSCIOC Meeting February 14, 2005
