The Basic Objectives of the OHS Graduation Project • 1. The student will be “stretched” or challenged through this project. • 2. The student must have a serious and sustained interest/passion about the project topic. • 3. The student must demonstrate growth throughout the process. • 4. The student must follow and pass (with satisfactory or exemplary) the NC Graduation Project Rubrics. • 5. The student will experience more of his/her community through this project.
5 Components • Proposal • Product w/Service Learning • Paper • Portfolio • Presentation
The Proposal • Full Block Formal Business Letter • Addressed to Owen High Committee • Attached to CONTRACT (includes student, parent, mentor, service learning coordinator signatures) • Paper topic approved by English teacher or Mrs. Wendy Cable (GP Committee chair) • Very specific guidelines • Mentor information sheet also required • Due to English teacher for review before committee
The Paper • MLA style (Modern Language Association) • Times New Roman 12 pt. font • Double Spaced, 1 inch margins • 5 full pages (1 line on the 6th) • Must have header and heading • Student generated graph/chart (1/4 size of page) • Works Cited page, including header • Paper is electronically turned in to Turnitin.com website as well as English teacher • The English teacher grades the first copy, with an option to revise for a higher grade. • MUST HAVE FLASHDRIVE FOR ALL WRITTEN MATERIAL
The Product • 15 hours w/ mentor for a satisfactory grade • 16 hours w/ mentor for an exemplary grade (A) • Mentor must be 21 years old • Must not be an immediate family member or a member of your household • Must be outside the school • 2 hours of service learning • May or may not be w/ mentor ( but must have a service learning coordinator) • 2 hrs. is part of the 15/16 hours • Must not be “free labor” • Community service encouraged • Product includes work w/mentor (shadowing or lessons), w/ a tangible piece of evidence (scrapbook, photo album, video, model, demonstration, etc.) • Photo documentation required for ALL students throughout the process • Product, Service Learning Component, Picture documentation, Graduation Project Log, Mentor Verification form, and Visual Aids ALL due same time • The community judges grade the product.
The Portfolio • White,1 inch, 3 ring binder w/ plastic sleeve in front • Must save material on a flashdrive • All information MLA style • Portfolio includes research paper as well as other reflective writing material • Photo documentation in portfolio • The English teacher grades the portfolio.
The Presentation • 2 Mock presentations (1 teacher, 1 class) • 8-10 minute SPEECH(grade penalty for time under or over) • Demonstrations, videos, etc. may expend 3 of those minutes • 3 community judges, 1 teacher room host • Professional attire • Specific components • The community judges grade the presentation.
GP Off Campus Day • One day to work with mentor off campus during school hours • Student is NOT counted absent, counts as a field trip • Student must seek prior approval from parent, English teacher, and Mrs. Turner • Student must give copies of off-campus approval to all current teachers and Mrs. Taylor—at least 2 days before planned event • Must use off-campus day opportunity before day product is due.
Fall 2014 Deadlines • Proposal: Wednesday, September 3 • Paper: Wednesday, October 15 • Product: Wednesday, November 19 • Portfolio: Tuesday, November 25 • Presentation: Tuesday, December 16
