  2. 1 ) Continue to operate the statewide earthquake monitoring and ShakeMap generation facilities • All three CISN Management Centers will continue to operate and maintain seismic stations, data communications and acquisition infrastructure, and archiving facilities. They will also produce and improve routine products such as hypocenters, magnitude, moment tensors, strong motion records, and ShakeMap • Implement statewide monitoring • Does the AC believe that the current routine CISN operations are serving the statewide needs of California?

  3. 2) Improve ShakeMap coverage and earthquake monitoring in selected regions of California • Increase station density and quality in under-served areas • Develop ShakeMap quality factor or 2 sigma error bars • What priorities does the AC place on specific geographic areas? • Central coast – Ventura-Santa Maria corridor • San Joaquin Valley – Southern San Andreas fault • Bay Area – San Diego County • Inland Empire – North Coast

  4. 3) Upgrade and enhance infrastructure at CISN centers to improve acquisition and processing capabilities, reliability, and security • This includes hardware such as computer processing systems and new networking equipment for improved data security. • What recommendations does the AC have for CISN to improve robustness and the survival of CISN in a major earthquake?

  5. 4) Upgrade and enhance existing CISN software systems to improve data processing and information delivery • As future demands for new or more reliable products for emergency managers are placed on CISN, we need to upgrade and improve the CISN software systems. In addition, hardware and software upgrades often have to be done simultaneously and modifications may be required to the applications specific software. An important part of the CISN software development effort is standardization of application interfaces and databases to facilitate exchange of software and data between the CISN partners. • What is the relative merit of standardization of products as compared to other CISN efforts such as improving robustness?

  6. 5) Verification of impact analysis with a moment tensor and synthetic ShakeMap will be calculated at the CISN southern California Management Center • When a ShakeMap is made within 5 minutes of the occurrence of a large earthquake, this tool will calculate a synthetic ShakeMap, and thus provide an independent validation of the impact. This software runs on a large computer cluster and takes advantage of the available three-dimensional velocity models, and point or finite sources. • How important is independent verification of ShakeMap?

  10. 6) Implement system for the simultaneous estimation of earthquake location and the seismic moment tensor at the CISN northern California Management Center • This method uses the continuous monitoring of the seismic wavefield (making full use of the seismic data), with differs from current methods that depend on phase picks for earthquake detection. As a result, this tool will provide an independent check for the rapid assessment of earthquake location and moment tensor. • How important is independent verification of locations, Mw, and moment tensors?

  12. 7) Outreach, communications, and technology transfer • Conduct workshops on use of tools such as: ShakeMap and CISN Display • Develop and distribute training materials for use of earthquake information • Maintain websites with up to date earthquake information • Continued enhancement of CISN Display • Continued enhancement of the CISN transport layer software • Provide scenario ShakeMaps for training • The CISN Warning Map • What are the relative priorities of the outreach items? Are there other outreach items that we missed?
