Copy the title and objective and answer the starter question. 10 minutes!! Continuing Coursework Date Learning Objectives: To finish the fourth paragraph Starter: Read through the quotations you wrote down last lesson. Remind yourself of the tension between Eddie and Rodolfo.
Fourth paragraph • Mention the growing tension between the brothers and Eddie. Talk about the stage directions where Marco lifts a chair in front of Eddie. Why does Marco do this? Evidence to include (you should have these from yesterday’s lesson): The stage direction says, ‘Marco is face to face with Eddie, a strained tension gripping his eyes and jaw, his neck stiff, the chair raised like a weapon over Eddie’s head – and he transforms what might appear like a glare of warning into a smile of triumph, and Eddie’s grin vanishes as he absorbs his look.’ Explain Marco’s facial expression (‘glare of warning’ and ‘smile of triumph’). Explain what message Marco is sending.
Sample fourth paragraph Eddie cannot stand Catherine and Rodolfo’s relationship. He looks down on Rodolfo. He does not think Eddie is a real man. He says, ‘He sings, he cooks, he could make dresses…’ Eddie sees these activities as something only women do. Hence Eddie gives him a boxing lesson and punches Rodolfo so that it ‘mildly staggers Rodolfo’. This shows that Eddie wants to show Rodolfo and Catherine what a true man is. Miller shows growing tension between the brothers and Eddie when the surprised older brother Marco, who shows Eddie he will protect Rodolfo. The stage direction says, ‘Marco is face to face with Eddie, a strained tension gripping his eyes and jaw, his neck stiff, the chair raised like a weapon over Eddie’s head – and he transforms what might appear like a glare of warning into a smile of triumph, and Eddie’s grin vanishes as he absorbs his look.’ Though Marco does not say anything, he warns Eddie by his actions that he is stronger.
