  1. Before the beginning there was God. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. He created them to show off His greatness. In the beginning God created Adam and Eve. He created them in His image, to reflect His glory God

  2. God also created these perfect image bearers to love and enjoy Him, to live intimately with Him and to rule creation for Him. They were His ambassadors, designed to live and rule in HisKingdom Kingdom of God God

  3. Instead, the first Man and Woman chose their own path and led all creation astray. They listened to and then followed the enemy, Satan. And thus began our journey of separation from God outside the goodness of His kingdom rule. Kingdom of God Man God

  4. Things went crazy. Their eldest son killed his brother and from then on the whole human race plunged into an abyss of shame and despair. They fell away from the One who Created them, the only One who could truly satisfy them. Kingdom of God Man God

  5. God saw that His beautiful earth had become hopelessly corrupt. He made the decision to destroy everything and begin again. And He chose Noah as His new ambassador. Noah and his family were stowed away on a large boat and then God wiped out the rest of mankind with a flood Kingdom of God Man God Noah

  6. But that boat was a welcome sign. It was a symbol of hope announcing God’s intention to provide a WAY out of the pit of shame and despair. God wanted to bring us back into His presence, to enjoy abundant life in His kingdom. And so, throughout history, God posted signs, each building on the other, showing us His way to come back home to Him. Kingdom of God Man God WAY Noah

  7. The first sign was given through Abraham. God promised to bless Abraham, and through Abraham to bless all mankind. Without giving any details, God announced His loving intention to bless the world through Abraham and his offspring. Kingdom of God Man God Abraham BLESS WORLD WAY Noah

  8. God first tested Abraham, asking him to sacrifice his son. In obedience Abraham placed his son on the altar and lifted the knife, ready to obey. When suddenly an angel commanded him to stop and offer a sacrifice in place of his son. God provided a ram which was caught in a bush. This ram was offered as a ransom in place of his son. This early and important sign announced to mankind that God’s WAY out of our pit of shame and despair would involve some kind of a sacrifice.   9. The descendants of Abraham disobeyed God and eventually found themselves enslaved by Pharaoh. There they cried out to God for deliverance. True to His gracious and merciful nature, God sent them a prophet named Moses. Moses was God’s ambassador. He was to help the nation of Israel live a Godly life and so represent God before the World. God intended that the Jews would live the kind of life that attracted other nations to follow God and enjoy His Kingdom blessings. But first Moses had to deliver the Jews from slavery in Egypt. To help Pharaoh obey, God sent a number of plagues. Each was meant to convince stubborn Pharaoh to let the people of Israel go. But Pharaoh would not listen. God finally sent one terrible plague, the plague of blood. On a given night, the Angel of death would come to each house and kill the first born child … UNLESS a sacrifice was offered in place of the child. Each family was to choose a lamb or young goat as the sacrifice. They couldn’t pick any old animal. God stipulated it had to be without defect. It could not suffer a broken leg, a blind eye or even a scarred ear. This sacrifice had to be a perfect. Kingdom of God Man God Moses PERFECT SACRIFICE Abraham BLESS WORLD WAY Noah

  10. And the blood of this sacrifice was to be smeared on the sides and top of the doorframes of each home. When the Angel of Death came to each home that night, where there was blood the angel simply passed over. Where no blood appeared, the angel entered and the firstborn died. This sign made it clear that the coming sacrifice, meant to bless the world, would be perfect and that the blood of this sacrifice would need to be applied to each individual family.   11. God did not love only the Jews. He chose the Jews and blessed them so they would demonstrate His goodness to the other nations. And so God gave Moses the 10 Commandments, the rules of life to help the Jews live a blessed life. If these had been obeyed, the Jews would have loved God and their neighbors and their blessed life would have attracted all the other nations to submit to God and His Kingdom reign.   12. So God sent Kings as ambassadors to rule His people the Jews. These Kings were to help the children of Israel reflect God’s goodness to the nations around. The greatest of all Kings was David, called “a man after God’s own heart.” But even King David was unable to perfectly obey God’s law. He committed adultery and brought dishonor to God in the eyes of other nations. So God promised a different way. He promised to send One who would be empowered by God so He could rule perfectly. God promised this coming One would be a descendant of David. But He would not be an ordinary man; He would be Anointed by God’s Spirit. Thus His name would be “Messiah,” the Anointed. This promised Messiah would eventually bring the blessing of Abraham, God’s Kingdom reign to all the world.   13. And, because this Messiah would reign perfectly, God promised to establish His Kingdom forever, the eternalKingdom of Heaven. Thus far the signs have indicated that God’s gracious WAY out of our shame and despair, His promised blessing through Abraham would involve a sacrifice, a perfect sacrifice, the blood of which must be applied to each family. Now we learn that this sacrifice will actually be a person, a descendant of David called the Anointed One or Messiah and that this Messiah would establish an eternal Kingdom of God on earth.   14. Several centuries passed and God sent many other prophets, each telling a little more about this promised Messiah, this unique, one of a kind Ambassador of God. Isaiah was one of those prophets and he announced this coming Messiah would bring justice to the world. Speaking of this Messiah, God said, “Behold my Servant, whom I have chosen, My Beloved with whom My soul is well pleased. I will put My Spirit upon Him and He will proclaim justice to the Gentiles” (Matthew 12:18). It would have been easy to misunderstand Isaiah’s prophesy and expect a soldier Messiah, a great warrior like David, who would lead a mighty army, conquer the enemy and set up His Kingdom by force. Instead God declared through Isaiah that this Messiah King would rule with gentleness. God said through Isaiah, speaking of the Messiah, “He will not quarrel or cry aloud nor will anyone hear His voice in the streets; a bruised reed He will not break, and a smoldering wick He will not quench, until He brings justice to victory; and in His name the Gentiles will hope” (Matthew 12:19-21). So the people waited for a great leader but, in time, they failed to understand this leader would rule with gentleness.   16. God sent other prophets. One, who actually came about 50 years before Isaiah, was named Jonah. God sent Jonah to warn the people of Nineveh to turn from their sin and follow the one true God. But Jonah refused. So God ordered a great fish to swallow Jonah and he remained in the belly of the fish for three days. But God wanted the people of Nineveh to hear about Him so He ordered the fish to spit Jonah back out, and Jonah went on to tell this Gentile nation about God. Whatever else this sign means, everyone knew that God’s WAY out of shame and despair would involve something like 3 days in a whale’s belly and Jesus made it clear that this sign pointed to something He would experience. We’ll see how in a minute.   17. Finally a great prophet, John, showed up on the scene and his primary mission was to prepare the way for God’s Messiah. And that’s what he did. John began preaching “repent for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” What good news!   18. But that was not all. John announced that the KING had come. John fulfilled his mission by announcing that Jesuswas the Anointed One and thus the Messiah King (Jn 1:32-33), the One sent by God to establish the eternal Kingdom of God on earth. What good news! Not only had the promised Kingdom arrived; the King Himself had arrived, King Jesus the Messiah!   19. But John had more good news. When John first laid eyes on Jesus, He shouted for all the world to hear, “Behold the Lamb of God, the sacrifice of God, who takes away the sins of the world.” With these words, prophet John announced that Messiah Jesus was the fulfillment of all the signs. This means Abraham’s sacrifice which ransomed his son from the knife was a sign pointing to Messiah Jesus who would ransom mankind from the pit of shame and despair. This means that the perfect lamb whose blood Moses commanded to be smeared on every home was a sign pointing to the Messiah Jesus, who was perfect and sinless. This means that the promised Son of David, the long awaited Messiah, is none other than Jesus.   20. … when the Messiah arrived, He pointed to no one else. All the signs stopped with Jesus. Jesus did not announce the world would be blessed through someone else. He did not tell His disciples to watch for another prophet who would come as the saving sacrifice. He did not prophecy of a future Son who would establish the Kingdom of God on earth. He did not predict a coming leader who would bring justice to the world. He didn’t say the Kingdom will come once the true King arrives. Instead Jesus said “Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from Me for I am gentle and lowly in heart and you will find rest for your souls.   21. All the signs point to Jesus because Jesus is God’s bridge that allows sinful people to escape the pit of shame and despair and come close to our holy, holy, holy God.   22. On one occasion Jesus said of Himself, “I am the Door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.” The WAY out of our shame and despair is an open Door. Jesus invited us to enter through Him … into the Kingdom of Heaven. There is no charge; there is no payment we can offer. He is the very mercy and grace of God who invites us to come to Him and enter through Him.   23. Many people find this unacceptable. They refuse to enter through Jesus, hoping to enter the Kingdom by keeping all God’s laws perfectly … as though this were remotely possible. They claim to accept that God is all merciful and all gracious but they act like He’s an exacting judge who only admits good people into His kingdom, if they are good enough.   24. Instead Jesus, God’s Messiah, came as the Door and invites shameful sinners to enter into the Kingdom through Him. He is God’s bridge into the Kingdom and He invites us to trust Him to get us over the pit of shame and despair into the Kingdom.   25. And when we do, when we enter the Kingdom through God’s Messiah, the Door, we find that Jesus is there in the invisible kingdom of heaven waiting for us. Jesus is not dead. His body is not buried in some grave here on earth. At the close of His life God raised Him to heaven, the only person to ever escape the grave. Though invisible to us, He is very alive today and invites us to walk through life with Him.   26. He knows and understands our shame. Because He walked this earth like us for over 30 years, He understands how we suffer from sin and shame and how we would naturally cower before a holy God. So He invites us to come with Him, to come in His name, to share His honor. Once while on earth, “the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear Jesus. And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying, “This man receives sinners and eats with them.” So Jesus told them this parable.   27. Jesus invites us to come and yoke ourselves to Him. He wants to share His honor with us, to put “the Father’s Robe” on us so that we are not filled with shame and despair but can enter into the Kingdom and come boldly to God. Not only does Jesus cover our shame, He also teaches us how to live without shame. His Words are called “the words of eternal life”(John 6:68). Jesus took the commandments of God given through Moses and explained them so that they produce life. For example He said “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.   28. The risen Messiah, Jesus, does not expect us to try and live this Kingdom life from out of our own resources. He yokes us to Himself, shares our burden and invites us to learn from Him, gentle teacher that He is. And what a model He is to follow. Jesus chose Judas as one of His disciples, all the while knowing that Judas would rob from Him and some day betray Him. However, such knowledge never effected the way Jesus treated even His enemy, Judas. On the night of His betrayal, Jesus announced to His 12 disciples that one of them would betray Him. John records “The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke” (John 13:22).It was obvious there had been no bad blood between Jesus and Judas or the disciples would have immediately suspected Judas. Instead, each began to wonder if he was the culprit. This gentle, kind, forgiving Jesus, offers to yoke Himself to us and bring us to God.   29. Later that night Judas led the Jewish leaders to Jesus. They arrested Him, beat Him, put Him on trial and falsely accused Him. Even so, no charges stuck because Jesus was sinless. Like the perfect lamb offered in Moses’ day, Jesus was the sinless lamb of God. He was crowned with thorns, whipped and eventually turned over to the Romans who crucified Him on a cross(wait till this point to complete the cross). All this took place on the night before Passover, the yearly celebration marking the night when the angel of death passed over every home smeared with blood. When the Romans nailed Jesus to the cross, they were unknowingly fulfilling the great sign of Moses. For Jesus is the great Passover sacrifice and His blood was shed as a sin offering for the whole world. All who accept this sacrifice and apply His blood to their hearts, are spared when the angel of death comes to claim us.   30. But Jesus is not dead today. Though His dead body was taken from the cross and placed in a grave, the grave only held Him for three days and then … He rose again to life! As Jesus said, the sign of Jonah pointed to Himself, for as Jonah was three days in the belly of a whale, so Jesus lay three days in a tomb and then rose to life again. And because He conquered death, we can conquer death, we who yoke ourselves to Him. On one occasion a friend came to Jesus, weeping because her brother had died. Jesus was deeply moved by her grief and pain and said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.” Then, to prove He is who He claimed to be, He went with her to the grave, commanded her dead brother to come forth and he returned to life. This Jesus invites us to yoke ourselves to Him. Yoked to Jesus, Satan cannot keep us in the pit of shame and despair, because Messiah Jesus is the resurrection and the life.   31. As I said, Jesus fulfilled all the signs that God provided down through history. He fulfilled the latter sign of Jonah and He fulfilled the first sign of Abraham for Jesus was a descendant of Abraham, and through Messiah Jesus God blessed the whole world. Jesus said of Himself “I AM the Bread of Life; whoever comes to Me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in Me shall never thirst” (John 6:35). No matter the tribe, people or tongue, whoever comes and believes in Jesus will find themselves satisfied. They will have the blessing promised to Abraham.   32. Jesus also called Himself our Shepherd, our loving leader. He said, “I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” Jesus did not come to forcefully overthrow His enemies with a sword but to lay down His life for them, like a loving shepherd risks his life for his sheep. • Thus Jesus fulfilled the Signs of Abraham, of Moses and of Isaiah. • He is Abrahams ‘momentous’ sacrifice that ransoms all Abraham’s true children. • He is Moses’ perfect, sinless sacrifice that guarantees protection from the angel of death for any who trust in Jesus’ blood • He is Isaiah’s promised Servant who brings justice to victory but only through gentleness. Jesus never led an army to kill His enemies. He did not force His Kingdom rule on earth, not when He came the first time. Rather, on His first visit, Jesus came as the Good Shepherd and laid down His life for us, and in so doing brought the possibility of goodness and justice to the whole world.   33. Jesus went further. He claimed of Himself, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” Jesus gives us His life; He tells us the truth and He is the very WAY out of our pit of shame and despair into the Kingdom of God. He not only lived God’s commandments perfectly, He showed us how to live them and then invites us to yoke ourselves to Him so we can live obediently with Him.   34. It’s important to realize, Messiah Jesus did not only come for the Jews. He claimed of Himself, “I am the Light of the World. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12).Jesus fulfilled the sign of Isaiah for He came to bring the light of justice to all people and nations. His invitation includes every man, woman and child - whoever follows the Light of the World will not stumble around in the darkness of shame and despair. He will enjoy the light of life.   35. Toward the end of His life, Jesus announced to the disciples “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” On our own we can do nothing, but yoked to Jesus, we can live the kind of obedient, fulfilling life that God created us to live. We can finally become God’s ambassadors ruling His invisible Kingdom of Heaven on earth.   37. Jesus could make all these “I AM” statements about Himself because He is the very Word of God. The Apostle John told us that Jesus is God’s Word that spoke all of Creation into existence. As such, He has always been. John went on to say, “TheWord became flesh and dwelt among us.” The very Word of God, eternally with God and eternally God, took on human flesh to come and save us from the pit of shame and despair and bring us into God’s invisible Kingdom. Such is the mercy and grace of God!   38. Illustration: A man once fell into a deep pit where he lay dying. All who came to rescue him shouted orders how he might get out of the hole. Nothing worked and the man slipped toward death. Then one man threw down a rope, climbed down into the pit, picked up the man and carried him out. That is precisely what God’s Messiah did. He left heaven, climbed into our pit of shame and despair, yoked Himself to us and pulled us out. And this Messiah Jesus invites us to come to Him, yoke ourselves to Him and walk this life with Him. He will bring us to God. The all important question is, will we accept His invitation and come?   39. 600 years later a man came to the Arab people, recognized by many as another prophet from God. His entire message can be summarized in three words: “Follow the signs!” 350 times the Qur’an warns people to follow the signs for they alone will lead one to heaven. If they are ignored, one is doomed to hell. It’s not surprising that this man claimed no title for himself other than that of “warner.” He warned the Arab people to follow the signs which all point to Messiah Jesus, the Way, the Truth and the Life. This Messiah Jesus invites us to come to Him, yoke ourselves to Him and walk this life with Him. He will bring us to God. The all important question is, will we accept His invitation and come?
