Initial Question - Summer 2010 What is the temperature of the mantle wedge and how does it relate to various subduction parameters? Stern, Rev. Geophys
Geodynamics Use recent models to predict the maximum T beneath the arc, and the depth at which it is attained
Petrology Use the composition of arc lavas and olivine-hosted melt inclusions to estimate the T, P at which they were generated
Seismology Use detailed across-arc profiles of seismic velocity and attenuation structure beneath arcs to highlight possible zones of partial melt or higher T
Challenges Uncertainties associated with each discipline make it difficult to directly compare the data P-T estimates for the lavas are more likely “last equilibration” P-T conditions, rather than the P-T at which they were generated A more manageable question was needed…
Refined Project - Dec. 2010 Do arc magmas produced under thicker crust show deeper equilibration pressures than magmas produced under thinner crust?
General Comments CIDER was a very rewarding experience Limit group size ? Perhaps the three disciplines (seismology, geodynamics, petrology) should have been separate groups? Multiple groups targeting different aspects of the same problem may lead to better productivity while still allowing for collaboration
