Writing the Essay • The essay/personal statement is NOT an option! • Personal statements vs. essays • Three Steps • Brainstorm and choose a topic • Write in YOUR voice • Proofread, edit and revise!
The Essay: Writing in YOUR voice • Give NEW information! This is a chance to give the admissions officers exactly what they want: a glimpse into your personality! • Refrain from endeavoring to galvanize your assemblage with voluminous prose. • Translation: Don’t try to impress them with big words. • SHOW, don’t tell • Make every word count!
The Essay: Edit, Edit, Edit! • Proofread, edit and revise your first draft. Set it aside for a little while and then reread it to see if you can make improvements. • Pass it on to friends, family, teachers, etc for comments and revisions. • Ask yourself these questions: • Does my essay sound like me and represent my voice? • Does my essay fully answer the question in a concise way? • Would my essay be remembered if I were reading hundreds of essays each day? • Does my essay describe something of importance to me? • Does my essay have several vivid, detailed examples that appeal to the senses? • Does my essay repeat information that can be found elsewhere in my application?
Letters of Recommendation • Choose wisely! • Be Prepared! • Ask at least two weeks in advance! • Give them your resume and essay and any other forms required for the application • Offer to meet with them • Provide the appropriate envelope • Follow-up! • Check-in near the deadline • Send a Thank You note!!
Fairs, Tours & Meetings with College Reps • Plan ahead! Make reservations (if necessary) and map out things you want to see and do. • Prepare a list of questions specific to the person you will meet. Ask for information you can’t find online. For ex: • What is student life like at your school? • What is your favorite thing about being a _________? • What do students do for fun here on the weekends? • Dress appropriately. • Ditch your friends and your cell phone! • Jot down your thoughts about the school before you leave.
