  3. Background Presentation at SWFDP at Entebbe • Climate of Ethiopia varies from humid to semi-arid with both abundant and scarce moisture. Hence, flooding and drought are frequent phenomena which have a direct impact on the agriculture, health, water and other socio-economic sectors of the region. Early warning systems should be an integral component of any nation’s disaster risk reduction strategy, enabling the governments at national to local levels and the communities to take appropriate measures for saving of lives and livelihoods in anticipation of a disaster.

  4. The seasonal classification of the region over Ethiopia, is from February to May, June to September and October to January, called Belg, Kiremt and Bega, respectively. The conditions of the main rain bearing systems in the region are: Inter-tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), Tropical Easterly Jet (TEJ), East African Low Level Jet (EALLJ), El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) as well as Mascarena, St. Helena, Azores and Arabian High pressure systems. National Meteorological Agency of Ethiopia is monitoring and forecasting short, medium and seasonal weather and climate by using: ● Every three hrs. national meteorological stations data ● EUMETSAT and sat24 satellite pictures ● Prognostic weather charts: PUMA satellite reception (MSG) project ● Global: ECMWF, Met Office (UK), NOAA/NCEP (USA) ● Regional: RSMC Nairobi, model outputs ● ENSO Presentation at SWFDP at Entebbe Mechanism for production of warnings

  6. ● Radio Program: Daily online briefing ● Television: Daily Program in Amharic and English languages; five days per a week in Tigrigna and Afaan Oromoo languages ● Telephone accordingly for request and to deliver sever weather warning ● Weather Report in Amharic and English are posted on Web(www.ethiomet.gov.et) ( blink alarm for indicating warning on the home page) ● Fax to appropriate sector.( EWRD, DRMFSS, MoA, MWE, MH, UN, NGO etc ● Conference/Seminar on seasonal bases ● NMA actively participate with the Disaster Risk Reduction Management Technical Working Group and reported the monthly weather assessment as well as dekadal and monthly forecast for the purpose of early warning. Presentation at SWFDP at Entebe NWP products of ECMWF, NCEP and UK met Office in conjunction with the RSMC Nairobi guidance are very helpful for our weather forecasting and weather related hazard warning. RSMC provides daily guidance  for short-range (days 1 and  2)  and medium range  on specified hazardous meteorological phenomena we are doing weather forecasts on based on the combination of prognostic chart interpretation and numerical weather prediction models and expert judgment.  SWFDP bring benefits in terms of enhancement confidence in operational forecasting and advancement in sever weather warning delivery Conclusion
