Introduction Despite their similar names, vertical and horizontal carousels are completely different automated storage and retrieval mechanisms when viewed attentively. The most obvious difference is in the way the devices operate. As their names suggest, Vertical Carousels rotate vertically, whereas Horizontal Carousels rotate horizontally. There's a lot more to say about these two dynamic storage and retrieval machines, however. www.verticalcarouselsaustralia.com
Horizontal Carousels • Horizontal Carousels are storage solutions that consist of rotating bins with shelves supported by an oval track. • The carriers are driven horizontally around the oval track by a motor located inside the oval track, stopping at a re- access point for storage or retrieval of things on a regular basis. • Both automated systems have been around since the 1950s and are sometimes referred to as "ASRS giants," despite the fact that this is not the case. • In fact, they are dependable storage devices because to their extensive history and materials management skills. • A variety of design improvements and enhancements over the years have ensured that these durable dynamic storage units continue to serve modern, world-class manufacturing and distribution businesses with improved material handling efficiencies, including: • 60–75 per cent reduction in floor space • 2/3 reduction in labour • 99.9% pick accuracy • increased throughput • improved inventory control www.verticalcarouselsaustralia.com
General Dimensions Both units are rectangular, with horizontal carousels ranging in length from 19 to 153 feet and vertical carousels ranging in width from 6 to 14 feet by 4 to 5 feet deep. Vertical carousels are broad and shallow, while horizontal carousels are thin and long, because both are accessed on the width dimension. Vertical storage carousels start at just over 7 feet tall and can grow to 32 feet tall, whilst horizontal carousels start at just over 7 feet tall and can grow to 13.5 feet tall. Horizontal carousels are ideal for rooms with ceiling heights of less than 15 feet, but they can also be double (or triple) layered for rooms with higher ceilings, but more on that later. www.verticalcarouselsaustralia.com
Horizontal Carousels Product Handling Size- Vertical Carousels • On vertical storage carousels, items are stored on carriers that are 49 to 144 inches broad by 17 to 24 inches deep. • The carrier is approximately 2 feet narrower than the entire unit, allowing room for the track on both sides. The height of the carrier can range from 8 to 19 inches. • Smaller items can be accommodated by further partitioning the carriers with additional shelves. • Totes, containers, boxes, and drawers can be used to organise smaller parts in a high-density storage setting. Horizontal Carousels • On horizontal carousels, items are stored in carriers that dangle from an overhead track. • Carriers can be 24.5, 32.5, or 37 inches wide and 18 inches, 22 inches, or 24 inches deep. • The carrier height, which ranges from 6 to 12 feet, determines the overall height of the unit. • To provide specialised storage places for totes, containers and boxes that store smaller things, carriers can be split using intermediary shelves. www.verticalcarouselsaustralia.com
Product Handling Weight- The weight of the product can also influence the automated storage method to use. Vertical carousels can carry up to 1,430 pounds per carrier, whereas horizontal carousels can carry up to 2,000 pounds per carrier. In some cases, a few pounds can make all the difference. Now, which one is Best for you? www.verticalcarouselsaustralia.com
Reason 1 # Available Physical Space • The physical area of your warehouse – particularly the ceiling height – is a crucial element in deciding between an automated vertical and horizontal carousel. • Due to a lower ceiling height than a vertical carousel, a horizontal carousel may be required. • A vertical carousel, on the other hand, may be the better option if space is limited and you require the largest cubic capacity. • Even at a lower ceiling height, vertical storage carousels offer a somewhat higher capacity than horizontal carousels. www.verticalcarouselsaustralia.com
Reason 2 # Picking Speed • The system throughput requirement, which changes based on the application, is another issue to consider. • How rapidly you need to get the product out of the system may determine the best technology for you. • Throughput rates are influenced by the system setup (layout and procedure), inventory locations (slotting), order profile (single line vs multi), picking strategy (single order or batch picking), and other factors. www.verticalcarouselsaustralia.com
Reason 3 # Product Mix • While making a decision, take into account the uniformity of your product combination. Vertical carousels allow for exceptionally dense storing of static product sizes. • Intermediate shelves can accommodate 2-inch-high products today and 4-inch-high products tomorrow, carrier size constraints apply. • Vertical carousels are more difficult to adapt to changes in product mix than horizontal carousels. Pick lights and carrier shelving can be modified and added or deleted as needed. www.verticalcarouselsaustralia.com
Reason 4 # Cost • It all comes down to the price and the amount of money you have on hand. • Overall, the horizontal carousel is the most cost-effective option per cubic foot stored. • While cost is always a consideration, it is never the most important consideration; selecting the best system to meet your needs now and in the future is critical. • The available space, the application's needs, and the pricing should all factor into your decision. • Request that a material handling professional examine your application, provide you with a cost comparison for both carousel storage methods. www.verticalcarouselsaustralia.com
