  1. Model Development and Application at CCCma John Scinocca CCCma

  2. Model Development and Application Past: Focus was on two sequential activities: ● model (physics) development – atmospheric (AGCM) – ocean (OGCM) ● model application (CMIP/IPCC) – finalize AGCM and OGCM – tune CGCM – set up and execute climate projection runs each required an enormous technical effort and so model development and application were performed sequentially on the IPCC cycle (~5-7y) problematic: – model development is never finished – tight time line meant CGCM was never well tested – not a viable approach for the increasing number and complexity of applications (science, policy, MIPS, operations)

  7. Application of CCCma models in support of Network Projects ● CCCma and Network partners collaborate on design of experiments and simulations – define work required to set up model to perform experiments – define output required (relative to CMIP5) ● CCCma scientists work with support staff to perform experiments – schedule work required to set up end execute model simulations – execution of simulations undertaken by support staff – model is executed and diagnosed creating time series on-the-fly based on CMIP5 protocols ● experiment output, in the form of NetCDF time series data, is made available to network partners through public ftp from CMC servers
