17. 11 Statements: FOUR CORNERS • We are going to discuss our answers to the statements. • After the question is read aloud, you will move to the corner which represents your answer. • We will discuss the statement, then move on to the next one.

33. The Great Depression: 1929-1940 • As a result of many factors, the: • Unemployment rate was at 25% • Banks went out of business • Everyone lost money • Long lines outside of job offices • Food pantries and soup kitchens were a common sight

34. Technology and Entertainment • People often went out to see movies with their friends and families. • When at home, people spent a lot of time playing board games and watching black and white TV.

35. Technology and Entertainment • Radio was rapidly becoming a mass media. Families and friends would congregate around the radio to listen to the news, reports and even soap operas in the evening. • TVs, however small, were gaining in popularity- though very few households were lucky enough to have them.

36. 1930s Clothing • The Great Depression began in 1929 and ended in the late 30’s. This had a huge affect on women and men’s fashion. • Changing clothes twice a day became unfashionable and women were often mending or sewing their clothes in order to wear them longer. • Men were in suits as much as possible and women were often found in dresses.

37. Social Customs • People often spoke of baseball, dancing, and politics- anything to get their attention away from the Great Depression. • Etiquette: Appropriate Conduct • Girls were to be girls and boys were to be boys.
