Michelangelo’s Background • Born in 1475 in Caprese Italy and died in 1564 • His full name was Michelangelo Buonarroti • Became an apprentice at the age of 13
Achievements • He learned the technique of fresco, which is when you paint on fresh plaster before it dries • This is the technique he would use when he painted the Sistine Chapel
Michelangelo spent a lot of time with Lorenzo de Medici until he died • Michelangelo completed the statue called “David” in 1504
Michelangelo decorated the tomb of Pope Julius II • He worked on the Sistine Chapel ceiling from 1508-1512 • It is believed that he did not bathe the entire time
In 1534, Michelangelo left Florence for Rome • This is where he spent the rest of his life • Michelangelo painted “The Last Judgment” in the wall behind the altar in Sistine Chapel
