  1. The Cougar’s Migration to Kentucky

  2. Life Cycle • A cougar lives about 8-10 years in the wild. In captivity, they can live anywhere from 15-20 years. • A female has a litter of 1-6 cubs. The survival rate is just over 1 cub per litter. • Cougars make a big game kill an average of once every 2 weeks. They hide the kill under leaves and branches and come back to it when it’s hungry.

  3. Hunting by Humans • Cougars used to be in all parts of the United States but westward expansion and hunting pushed the cougar into areas west of the Rocky Mountains and Florida. • Today, cougar hunting is allowed in Arizona, Idaho, Nevada, and New Mexico.

  4. The Cougar’s Recognized Area • The cougar’s range has been identified as the picture shows. As you can see, there have been sightings as far east as the Mississippi River.

  5. Migration into Kentucky • Cougars are not recognized to be in Kentucky. However, reports of sightings, livestock killings, and tracks have increased in the past few years.

  6. What do you do if you spot a cougar? • If you see a cougar, do not approach. If you can, take a photo of the animal for evidence. • Cougars do not usually attack people but if you fear an approaching cougar will attack, make constant eye contact and loud, calm shouts. DO NOT RUN. • If a cougar does attack, fighting back with sticks, rocks, and bare hands may make the animal retreat.
