  4. Mastering Math Facts Every few days you will be seeing the Mastering Math Facts handouts come home. Each day we practice building our “fact power” by reviewing with a small group or partner and then taking a timed math probe. For the most part, the Rocket Math program adds only 2 new facts (with turnaround facts) each new level. I challenge the children to beat their own best scores. Please continue to practice these facts at home. You do not have to return these papers; however, I would suggest that you make a flashcard packet for at-home practice. By the end of second grade, our goal is to have the children fluent in basic addition and subtraction facts.

  5. Language Arts Programs - Fundations (decoding/encoding) - Early Interventions in Reading (decoding) - Wonderworks/Wonders (comprehension, grammar, writing) - Wright Group (guided reading)

  6. Your child will be assigned homework each day, Monday through Thursday. In class, he/she will be responsible for copying homework onto a homework assignment sheet. Homework will normally include “Reading Log” along with a written assignment in language arts and math. • Each evening please review the assignment sheet with your child and initial the “parent signature” box. A parent initial is also required on the reading log after each entry. • I understand how busy some nights can be with family obligations and after school activities. If for any reason, your child is not able to complete his/her homework one evening, just jot me a note.

  7. A few more things…. • Restorative practices/circles • Reading log incentive • Brain chain • Marble jar
