  1. A New Stripline Connection to JPARC Horn 1 Larry Bartoszek BARTOSZEK ENGINEERING 9/23/04

  2. Polarity of plates • New design has this polarity : RED-BLUE-RED-BLUE/BLUE-RED-BLUE-RED • There is a mirror plane of symmetry for horns • If there is no BLUE/BLUE mirror symmetry, the connection becomes almost impossible • Plates have to get around each other

  3. Top view (viewing plane parallel to horn central axis)

  4. View looking downstream along axis of horn

  5. Start with this water-tight horn

  6. “Ears” connect inner and outer conductors to stripline plates. Ears may be assembled last during horn module assembly.

  7. Detail view of connection between horn and ears

  8. Exploded View of connections

  9. Outer conductor corner connection exploded

  10. Outer conductor corner connection detail

  11. Advantages of this design • Tolerances in manufacturing of parts may be looser than the first design • Tolerance-caused differences can be taken up in the loose fit of bolt holes • Design does not rely on the accuracy of rolled and bent parts • No plates should need machining at assembly • Current may be more cylindrically uniform

  12. Possible disadvantages • The gap in between plates is not as constant as in the first design • The overlap between blue and red plates is not as perfect as it was in the first design • Do these differences cause a problem for the electrical characteristics of the stripline?

  13. What is missing? • Need to develop a clamping mechanism to resist forces from stripline • Need to design insulators as part of clamping mechanism

  14. Fastener Bill of Materials (so far)
