Why does a ‘One to One’ Chromebook create Digital Learning Opportunities? • Individual ( and secure) PUPIL PROFILES • RECORDING LEARNING using Google Docs, Google Slides and Google Sheets to work COLLABORATIVELY • Ready ACCESS TO INTERNET for research and exploration • Access to APPS to support learning on own device • Ready access to a CAMERA/VIDEO to capture learning

Chromebooks What a Chromebook is and isn’t • It is an excellent browsing tool. • All of the pupils’ work is automatically saved onto the cloud. • G suite has apps and access to google classroom so that the pupils can do their homework and send it direct to their teachers. • It isn’t a laptop. • A Chromebook doesn’t have the memory space of a laptop. • It doesn’t naturally run programmes like Microsoft word etc. although these can be added and there are tutorials for this available on line. • It does have compatible alternatives as part of the package.

  4. Chromebooks Exploring the outside of the Chromebook There are USB sockets which pupils can use to transport work from a PC/ Laptop to the chromebook. You can also use these for plug and play devices like a mouse. This is useful for pupils who find the trackpad difficult to use. There is also an HDMI socket as well as one for headphones and the charging cable. There is also an on off button.

  5. Chromebooks What’s under the lid and how does it turn on? In the top right hand corner you will find the on button. This is sometimes printed with a padlock icon. There will probably be icons left over from the last person who logged on. You can’t log on without their password and they can’t log in as You! Everything that you do is personal to you. Go to add a person and you will be prompted to put in your details.

  6. Chromebooks Put the email you have been given in here. Then hit next and you’ll be prompted for the password Flick up from the bottom and you will see some of the apps that are already on the account. If you get some apps they only appear on your account. They will follow you from platform to platform. Whoever’s device you are using. The Chromebook has a touch screen which can be flipped around. Give it a go!

  8. Chromebooks • You can access your gmail and the web with this. • Have a quick play around with it. • Now that you’re on the web you will see some signs in the top right corner. • Some of these are common to google pages when you are surfing and some of them are specific to google chrome.

  9. Chromebooks Nine dots which, when clicked on let you access your apps. The pupils can use this to access Google classroom. Give it a go

  10. Chromebooks Click on docs and make up a short document and play with the programme. • Right click is two fingers together on the track pad. This will allow you to access things like the spell checker and copy and paste. • You can try out slides and sheets as well. All of these things will auto save.

  11. Chromebooks Adding an app. The pupils will possibly be asked by various teachers to add an app to their chrome account. These apps can be subject specific or may be useful for many classes.

  12. Chromebooks Within the classroom Chromebooks will also be used to enhance the curriculum and won’t take over from books. They will be used for individual work, projects, homework, google classroom at home and in class as well as for research and collaboration. Their use will vary from class to class as they may not be relevant to every topic being covered and they will be of great benefit when pupils have to work at their own pace giving them a private space in which to make their way through a topic.

CHROMEBOOK SECURITY • Whilst in school, internet access via the Chromebooks is filtered via a product provided by Fortinet • RM Buzz is used to gather data each time a user accesses an online site • RM Buzz gathers data per userand not per device so pupils MUST logout when finished using Chromebook • Whilst out of school, internet access via the Chromebooks is filtered and monitored through RM Buzz • Parents are advised to link any home Broadband filtering to their child’s Chromebook (and any other devices they may have) for further protection and security • Each time a user logs onto a Chromebook, they are agreeing to the council’s Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) which includes use in and out of school hours/grounds
