It turns out Penelope Pureheart, aka The Fake by the Lake, has a long criminal history as a noted forger of musical treasures in Cleveland … half the displays in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame are her forgeries, but she had fled ahead of the law, leaving no trace.
“Penelope” was the first to catch wind of the Beethoven score several years ago, so she faked a Library Science diploma and got a job at RFL to try to track down the prize, with no leads until the Suspects showed up.
Then she saw the Director giving Mr. Boddya library tour. Recognizing him as a private sleuth from Cleveland, she realized the jig was up. When the tour got to the jail cells, she pushed over a heavy set of shelves, hoping to kill both men. Only partly successful, she still had to get rid of Director, fearing he knew her secret.
The Filmmakerhad captured someone trying to pilfer the manuscript, but it was Penelope, not the Director, so he was blackmailing the wrong person.
Finally, running out of time, Penelopepushed the Director off the balcony. She pretended to find the body, hiding the score in the sideboard amid the confusion.
