  3. Three Bears Duty to Others Personal Responsibility Suffer for Christ

  4. Duty to Others “Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”(v. 2) • This duty begins in v. 1: • Recognizing who needs spiritual help • Restoring brethren who are living in sin • How can we do this? • Get to know them (1 Cor 9.19-23) • Spend time with them (Mt 5.14-16) • Love them (Mt 22.37-40) • Begins with our influence on others (2 Kings 4.8-10)

  5. Personal Responsibility • At first, may seem a contradiction to v. 2 • “Bear one another’s burdens…” • Each will be judged individually (Rom 2.5-8; Phil 2.12) • You will NOT be judged by… • Your family • Your church • Your friends “For each will have to bear his own load.” (v. 5) Judgment will be based on YOU and no one else, for you are the only person who determines your eternal destiny.

  6. Suffer for Christ • Suffering is to be part of your life: 2 Tim 3.12; 1 Pet 4.12-19 • It can be experienced in a number of ways: • You feel alone. • People make fun of you. • People think you’re strange/weird/different. • You get asked condescending questions about your faith. • You feel threatened every time you must say or do something to stand for what is right. “I bear on my body the marks of Jesus.” (v. 17) • BUT…it is how you respond to the suffering that will make or break you as a Christian.

  7. Suffer for Christ • Suffering is to be part of your life: 2 Tim 3.12; 1 Pet 4.12-19 • It can be experienced in a number of ways. • Jesus calms the storm (Lk 8.22-25) • We learn that storms: • Come unexpectedly • Strengthen & build wisdom • Eventually end • Leave damage behind but also provide room & time for repair “I bear on my body the marks of Jesus.” (v. 17)

  8. Suffer for Christ • Suffering is to be part of your life: 2 Tim 3.12; 1 Pet 4.12-19 • It can be experienced in a number of ways. • Jesus calms the storm (Lk 8.22-25) • These tests are to be beneficial to our faith, not detrimental: James 1.2-3 • These tests make our faith pure and genuine before God: 1 Peter 1.6-7 “I bear on my body the marks of Jesus.” (v. 17) Will you jump out or stay in?

  9. Conclusion: Know & love your brethren Work out your own salvation Live for Jesus no matter what
