2014-2015 The Five Steps Of Training for Food Services Staff
The Five Steps of Training The five basic steps to good teaching/training are: • Tell • Show • Try • Observe • Praise or Redirect
The Five Steps of Training The First Step – Tell • A manager must tell a person specifically what it is he/she is to achieve • All good performance begins with clear goals. • These goals should include a statement which defines what it is a person is to accomplish
The Five Steps of Training The Second Step – Show • A manager sets standards. It’s one thing to tell people what you want, but another to provide them with a clear picture of how to perform the task • With this second step of Show, staff need to have a series of stages or steps to get people to deliver good performance
The Five Steps of Training The Third Step – Try • Assign one task at a time to the employees • Employees may be overwhelmed with many tasks • Allow employees to learn and grow
The Five Steps of Training The Fourth Step - Observe Performance • It’s necessary to observe trainees closely throughout the training process • The trainer will observe and provide feedback as needed • Allow trainee to practice
The Five Steps of Training The Fifth Step - Praising and/or Redirect There are two parts of this last step, since there are two potential outcomes to the efforts of any trainee • If they do a good job, you praise to motivate • If the trainee needs help, redirect with positive reinforcement
The Five Steps of Training Tell them what they need to do and show them how
The Five Steps of Training Employee will try and Manager will observe
