First Sound Fluency (FSF)(beginning of Kindergarten to middle of Kindergarten) Scoring Rules: 1 minute test 2 points for correct initial phoneme 1 point for each correct initial consonant blend, consonant plus vowel, or consonant blend plus vowel Mark a slash / through the 0 for no response, letter naming, or incorrect responses Use the scoring guide at the bottom of the sheet to compute the score Letter naming is NOT progress monitored using DIBELS. We suggest that you use PALS Quick Checks to progress monitor letter names and sounds.

Phoneme Segmentation Fluency (PSF)(middle of Kindergarten to beginning of 1st grade) 1 minute test Circle the word if the student repeats the word without saying any sound segments. No point Mark a slash / if incorrect Leave blank any sounds the student omits Write sc (self-correct) over any corrected segments Underline sounds the way the student said the sounds. 1 point is given for each line you draw. Kindergarten and 1st grade teachers are encouraged to use PALS Quick Checks to progress monitor letter names and sounds.

Nonsense Word Fluency (NWF)The purpose of this test is to read the entire word correctly without having to say the individual sounds.(middle of Kindergarten to beginning of 2nd grade) • Correct Letter Sounds (CLS) • Student receives 1 point for each correct sound • Whole Words Read (WWR) • Student receives 1 point for each word read correctly • Underline each sound or word the student says • Mark a slash / through any incorrect letter sound • Write sc (self-correct) above any corrected sound. These do not count as errors. • Leave blank any sound the student didn’t attempt • Give students 3 seconds to attempt an answer before marking it incorrect.

DIBELS Oral Reading Fluency (DORF)(middle of 1st grade to end of 6th grade) 1 minute test Do not read the title to the student. If the student reads the title, start the timer when done. Draw a slash / through each word missed Skipped words are counted wrong Added words do not count against them Wait 3 seconds before giving a student a word. Mark the word as wrong Names are counted wrong each time they are said wrong Proper nouns are counted as correct if it could be pronounced that way. Example: Dubai could be /Dubay/ because /ai/ could be said as a long a.

DORF Retell Only do retell if the student was able to read 40 words or more correctly in the passage: Total Words – Errors = Total Words Correct As the student responds, move your pen through the retell number grid for every word the student says that is on topic. Do not count words off topic or non-words (um, uh, etc.) If the student hesitates for 3 seconds, give the prompt “Can you tell me anything more about the story?” Retell quality is determined by the type of response the student gave

DAZE Test(beginning of 3rd grade to end of 6th grade) • Complete instructions are found in the DIBELS Next Assessment Manual page 100 • 3 minute test • Scoring Guide: • Draw a bracket after the last item the student completed in 3 minutes. • Mark a slash / over all incorrect or blank answers that the student attempted to complete.
