  2. GENERAL SAFETY GUIDELINES • Always wear protective lab coats before entering the lab • Always wear appropriate proper clothing • Confine long hair and loose clothing. • Don’t wear high heals, open toes shoes, sandles or shoes made up of woven material

  3. Contact lenses should not be wear in the lab. If chemical is splashed in to eye, contact lens may concentrate the lens. Thereby increasing potential for the eye damage • Never remove any chemical from facility without proper authorization • Always know the physical & chemical hazards associated with materials that are being utilized in the lab

  4. Never performed unauthorized work, preparations & experiments • Never engage in horseplay, pranks, or other acts of mischief in chemical or biological area • Use equipments & chemicals only for their intended purpose • Never return reagents to stock bottles • Never leave an experiment unattended which is being heated or then it is an exothermic one

  5. Support all test tubes beakers and flasks with the clamps, do not use cracked or chipped glassware • Don’t attempt to identify the chemical by smell & taste • Don’t use mouth suction for strong chemicals. Always use pipette filter while using pipette • Always use hood when there is possibilty of coresening or poisonous fumes being emmitted from chemicals utilized

CLEANLINESS • The work area must be clean & chemicals should be tight properly & they should be labeled • Work area should be free abstractions & clean up the area after practical • Always wash hands with water before leaving the working area • Avoid the use of solvent while washing the skin because they may remove the natural protective oil of skin &thus can cause irritation

  7. Spilled chemicals must be cleared &dispose off properly

  8. GLASSWARE HANDLING • Forceful handling during storage procedure must be avoid • Damage item must be reported • Adequate hand protection must be done • Never use crack glassware & never picked up broken glassware • Glassware should be clean properly

  9. EATING, DRINKING, SMOKING • Eating, drinking smoking chewing gums in lab is strictly prohibited • Food beverages, cups & other eating & drinking utensils should not be stored in lab refrigerators • Lab water sources& deionized water should not be used during dying purposes • Don’t smoke in lab as tobacco products catch & react chemicals • Glassware used for lab operation should not be used to prepare or consume food

  10. PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT, SPILLS & ACCIDENT REPORTING • Student working in lab must be familiar with the location & use of protective equipment • Eyewash • An accessible fire extinguisher in case of any spillage or accident, report to your respective teacher as early as possible

  11. CHEMICAL HAZARDS • Students should read chemical hazards & observe the precaution dangerous chemical can be grouped as follow • CORROSIVE CHEMICAL • Acids & bases may cause burn of skin & eyes e.g. sulphuric acid, nitric acid & HCl • TOXIC CHEMICALS • They are those chemicals which damage biological structure & function through expose are accumulation in tissues

CARCINOGENS • They should be labeled for occupational safety & should be labeled with precautions • FLAMEABLES & EXPLOSIVES • These are chemicals that may easily burn & serve as fuel for fire e.g. sodium, sulphur • NOTE: • In case of any emergency clean the area with water & contact teacher immediately
