Temperature • Temperature is a measure of the degree of hotness or coldness of a body or environment. • Air Temperature: 102◦ F • Water Temperature: 90 ◦F • The cooler the water is the more oxygen is available for the organisms.
Turbidity • Turbidity is muddy or opaque, as a liquid clouded with a suspension of particles. • Turbidity was 60 cm, which is very good. • Turbidity of water site #2 was 27 cm.
Dissolved Oxygen (DO) • DO is the amount of oxygen present in the water. • DO was 13 mg/l oxygen (highest of the 3 sites)
pH • pH is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution, The pH scale uses ranges from 0 to 14 with 7 considered neutral. Less than 7 is more acidic and greater than 7 becomes more basic. • pH for our water site was a 9
Nitrates • Nitrates are a salt or ester of nitric acid, containing the group NO₃. They dissolve extremely easily in water and are an important component of the nitrogen cycle. • Nitrates: 3.6 mg/l ammonium nitrogen • Nitrates: 3.9 mg/l nitrogen • This stems from the history of horse stables being up hill from the water site.
Biodiversity • Biodiversity is the existence of a wide variety of plant and animal species in their natural environments. • We found all of the following: skunkweed, mite, mayflies, scud, leech, dragonflies, backswimmers, left handed snail, boatman, damsel flies, aqua worms, tadpoles, pollywogs, frogs, bluegill sunfish, mosquito fish, Dwarf American toad, etc. • This site had fish so all the Macroinvertibrates were much smaller than from site #2. • The more predators the smaller the prey.
Healthy or Not? • Very Healthy • Water site 3 was also very healthy but we believe ours is the healthiest.
Explanation of Why • High DO • Great Turbidity • Biodiversity
What does it mean? • This water site is thriving and can support many different types of plants and animal species. • It can also support a wide range of Macroinvertibrates. • This also means the fishing is GOOD!
