  4. Simply Said Look for adults Feel for juveniles Sample for veligers Mussel on monofilament

  5. Survey Period & Frequency When and how often… Need to understand biology of the targeted life stage and environmental parameters… • Temperature influences spawning • Early detection coincides with spawning season • Juvenile and adult stages coincides after peak of spawning season

  6. Permits & Permission Not required to examine existing and deployed substrates. However… collection of any organism or substrate suspected to harbor mussels or any other organism is prohibited by: • Fish and Game Code Section 1002 and 2301 • Title 14 Sections 650 and 670.7

  7. Permits & Permission Before initiating monitoring efforts… • Obtain permission and coordinate activities with organization responsible for the water body or facility. • If you are not sure who to contact, start with park ranger, recreational or general manager.

  8. Data Collection & Reporting OMG, OMG I think we have Q/Z mussels – what to do, what not to do…

  9. Report Monitoring Activities Use CDFG monitoring data forms… Submit all results to local CDFG Regional Biologist… See handouts for who to contact in your region.
