July 2012 - A Publication for Georgia Power Retirees Ambassadors, Citizens of Georgia Power and Georgia Power active employees recently teamed up with Southern Crescent Habitat for Humanity to work on a project at Tara Oaks Senior Living Community in Riverdale. The sponsorship of five single story, 2-bedroom attached homes gave an opportunity to make a real difference in the community and have a lasting impact on families through our service. The build was a five week effort that utilized fifty volunteers each day including the families that will purchase the homes. Shown below are pictures of the build and members of the Metro South Ambassadors that provided workers the entire five weeks. Service is the rent that you pay for room on this earth. Shirley Chisholm
First FFA director honored as he nears 100 T. D. (Dick) Brown, Metro East Ambassador, was recently honored by Gov. Nathan Deal and the Georgia Senate for his service in the field of agriculture education. Brown helped build the FFA Center, a six year project beginning in 1939, and was director of the facility. In 1945, he became the first state executive secretary of the Future Farmers of America, a position he held until 1960. From 1960 to 1974 he was assistant state supervisor of agricultural education for District IV. He is a member of the Georgia Agriculture Education Hall of Fame. Deal’s commendations states that Brown “has played a vital role in our state’s agricultural industry, has been a perennial leader in the field, has long held a deep, personal commitment to those in agricultural education.” The Georgia Senate also recently passed a resolution in honor of Brown, recognizing his “effective, efficient, unselfish and dedicated service to the state of Georgia” along with his “significant organizational and leadership talents, remarkable patience and diplomacy, his keen sensitivity to the needs of the citizens of this state.” Brown will turn 100 on November 11. His secret to longevity? “Trying to live right, trying to live by the Bible and trying to treat everybody right,” he said. His wife, Margaret, was a company employee from 1966 until 1988. Ultimately, the only way to experince the richness of life is to live in an attitude of gratitude: to appreciate what you have and what you can give. The best way to ensure your happiness is to assist others in experiencing their own. Anthony Robbins
Batton was leader in basketball William “Moe” Batton was inducted as a member of the ABAC Athletics Hall of Fame on March 3 at the fifth annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony in the Grand Lobby of ABAC Lakeside. He averaged 24 points per game at ABAC where he was a freshman starter on the state and regional championship team in 1949. The Montezuma native was captain of the 1950 ABAC team and a unanimous all-state selection. While at ABAC, Batton was also selected Most Athletic, Friendliest, and Best All-Around by the student body. He was also named Mr. Baldwin. In 1950 Coach Bruce Gressett wrote, “Batton was one of the best athletes to ever play at our college. He is a clean Christian gentleman. In two seasons of basketball, I never saw him pull a dirty trick.” “I remember the closeness of that team,” Batton said of the 1949 ABAC squad. “We all got along really good. Coach Gressett was one of the best men I have ever known. He was a fantastic coach.” Batton wound up working for the Georgia Power Company for 33 years before his retirement. He and his wife of 60 years, Betty Grace, have lived in Columbus for the past 30 years.
