  1. Proposal of CIREN for NSF's IRNC Solicitation July 5, 2004 Kazunori Konishi APAN Cairns Meetings

  2. What is CIREN? CIREN:Consortium of International Research and Education Networks Most of the Research & Education Networks have joined this proposal, for expanding the global collaborations. Principal Investigator Michael McRobbie (Indiana Univ.) Co-PI Doug Van Houweling (Internet2) Dai Davies (DANTE) Shigeki Goto (APAN) Nelson Simoes da Silva (CLARA) APAN Cairns Meetings

  3. Requirements & Commitment 1. Support of R&E Community: Major Networks have joined this proposal. 2. Network Topology: US – Tokyo - HK Busan SG – (IN) 3. Network R&D: NOC Collaborations, HOPI(Hybrid Optical and Packet Infrastructure), Measurement Infrastructure, E2E Performance, Security Center, etc. 4. Support of NSF’s CyberInfrastructure: Global deployment of HENP, VLBI, NCMIR, TeraGrid, etc. 5. Extension to other region: Connection to India will be studied. APAN Cairns Meetings

  4. Joint Research Projects • The following projects are expected for Korea to join the projects: • NOC Collaborations: Global CIREN NOC • HOPI • Measurement Infrastructure: Observatory • E2E Performance: piPEs • Security: virtual Security Operation Center • CyberInfrastructure: HENP, VLBI, NCMIR, TeraGrid APAN Cairns Meetings

  5. HOPI APAN Cairns Meetings

  6. Possible HOPI Connections • Laboratory-based Layer 1 or 2 connections from Korea will be accepted, for encouraging the network researches. • ANF-based Layer 1 or 2 connections will not be accepted; MPHPT will feel the difficulty to explain the connections to the Ministry of Finance. • GLIF agrees Hybrid approach is promising! APAN Cairns Meetings

  7. Observatory • Backbone Network Measurement will be jointly executed by Researchers as well as NOC: • Throughput, Latency, Routing, Netflow, Usage, Router, Syslog • Data collected by NOC will be provided to the authorized network researchers or students, for encouraging the network research activities. APAN Cairns Meetings

  8. Observatory as an Advanced NOC Service Observatory system will grow up R&E networks! Software, Papers, etc. Basic NOC Service Helpful in operation Advanced NOC Service Researchers Data with authentication Observatory • Developed by NOC researchers & maintained by NOC engineers/operators • Common Tools with High Priority • Output data in standard format can get measurement data of the global networks and work together with foreign researchers. APAN Cairns Meetings

  9. End-to-end Performance • E2E performance can be executed by the joint efforts of network researchers and e-Science/Application researchers, ex. eVLBI. • This project is critical for the development of APAN. Tokyo-LA link Usage is shown below: APAN Cairns Meetings

  10. Security • Security researchers will work closely with NOC for stabilizing the networks. • NOC will provide Netflow data to the authorized researchers for encouraging the security researches over the real networks. APAN Cairns Meetings

  11. CyberInfrastructure • e-Science Projects such as HENP, VLBI, NCMIR, and TeraGrid will be initiated by the network researchers to show the availability or dependability of the networks. • e-Science or application researchers will carefully evaluate the networks, and will adopt the networks later on. APAN Cairns Meetings

  12. Issues of CyberInfrastructure • e-Science researchers require the huge bandwidth, but they don’t know how to make full use of the networks. • APAN NOC folks are working for the backbone, and it is not easy to help the end-to-end services; it is critical for e-Science projects to hire the network experts to kick off their projects. APAN Cairns Meetings
