Bell Ringer – Nov. 16, 2012 • Explain what happens during the process of photosynthesis. • Explain what happens during the process of respiration. • Be sure to use the following words in each of your explanations: • Carbon Dioxide • Oxygen • Glucose • Energy • Water
Photosynthesis • Photosynthesis happens inside of the chloroplast of plant cells. During this process plants absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through their leaves, water through their roots, and light energy from the sun through their leaves. They combine all of these things to make their food, glucose. Through this process, they also produce (give off) oxygen.
Respiration • Respiration occurs in the mitochondria of both plant and animal cells. During respiration simple sugar (glucose) and oxygen taken in by the cells are broken down into carbon dioxide, water, and energy.
Include the following…. • Explanation of each process • What takes place during the process? • The organelle where the process takes place • A picture of that organelle • Any formulas associated with that process • A drawing to represent the process.
Instructions for Foldable • Draw and cut out one Chloroplast and one Mitochondria. • Glue them under the appropriate information • Draw & Label an Animal Cell AND a Plant Cell on the back of your foldable.
Test Corrections • On a sheet of notebook paper, write the questions that you missed and their answers. • For the sheet on Labeling the Cell, draw the cell over again and label it correctly. • Staple your test corrections to your test and place them on the front table. • Go back to your seat and complete the assignment on the board using your science book. The answers will go in your notebook.
Writing Prompt • Tell me everything that you learned about photosynthesis from your lab research yesterday. • Be sure to include • What is photosynthesis? • Which type of cells carry out this process? • Where does photosynthesis occur within these cells?
Warm-Up • In which type of cells does photosynthesis occur, plant cells or animal cells? • In which organelle does photosynthesis take place? • Draw a picture of that organelle.
Warm-Up • What is the formula for photosynthesis? • Explain this process in words.
Warm-Up • WITHOUT using your notebook…. • What is the formula for photosynthesis? • What is the formula for respiration?
Classwork • Read p. 126-132 • Answer questions #1-5 on p. 132 • Copy Figure 2 on p. 127 in to your notebook. • Bring your Study Guide and this completed classwork up to me.
Bell Ringer – Nov. 14, 2012 • Draw a chloroplast. • What is the function of the chloroplasts? And are they found in plant cells, animal cells, or both? • Draw a mitochondria. • What is the function of the mitochondria? And are they found in plant cells, animal cells, or both?
What is a cell? • The smallest unit of life capable of performing life functions.
Cellular Processes What does a cell have to do?
Organisms survive because of 4 cellular process • Photosynthesis • Respiration • Waste Elimination • Mitosis
Photosynthesis occurs in plant cells
Photosynthesis • Plants use light energy • To combine with carbon dioxide • To combine with water • To make simple sugar • So the plant can use it • Extra sugar is stored in the vacuoles • This happens in the chloroplast
The plant uses______________ • To combine________________ • To combine________________ • To make__________________ • So that __________________ • ________is stored in vacuoles. • This happens in the __________
Recipe for Photosynthesis • Add 6 molecules of carbon dioxide • Add 6 molecules of water • Add light energy (sunlight) to change into chemical energy(chemical reaction) • This makes food – Sugar • 6 molecules of Oxygen are released into the air.
Respiration • All organisms (plants and animals) break down simple sugar into carbon dioxide and water and release energy. • Respiration occurs in the mitochondria of cells.
Why does a cell need energy? • BUILD • REPAIR • REPRODUCE
Photosynthesis versus Cellular Respiration
Photosynthesis vs. Respiration Photosynthesis Respiration Simple sugar broken down CO2 given off O2 taken in & used Produces carbon dioxide & water Takes place in mitochondria • Simple sugar made • CO2 taken in • O2 given off • Produces simple sugar & oxygen • Takes place in chloroplasts
Waste Elimination • Organisms rid cells of waste products that could be harmful
Waste Elimination • As waste products accumulate in a cell, • The waste will diffuse out of the cell. • Diffusion occurs
Mitosis • Cell reproduction • Starts in the nucleus of the cell • Produces two daughter cells • Identical cells produced • NEEDED for growth, replacement, and asexual reproduction.
