READING • Reading techniques will help you read efficiently: • Previewing • Skimming • Scanning
Previewing • Look at the title, subtitles, author, source and try to guess what the text is about • Read the introductory paragraph • Consider what you already know about the topic • Look at the visuals • If you are reading in a foreign language try and predict which economic terms and general expressions might appear in the text
Skimming • Read to get the main idea • Can you identify the main arguments? • Formulate them in your own words • Write down your expectations: what do you expect to learn from the text? • Do you have questions about the text at this point? Are you supposed to answer some questions? • Number the paragraphs (for better orientation)
Scanning • Read the topic sentences (usually the first sentence in each paragraph) • Read the topic sentence and the last sentence in each paragraph • Look for key words and finally... Reading the whole text you may need to take / make notes...(procedure presented in a separate PPT)
TAKING NOTES WHILE READING Four-step procedure: • SKIM to get the rough idea of the content (title, introductory paragraph, pictures?) • SCAN to spot the essential: underline the main points (key words, topic sentences) • GROUP PARAGRAPHS (how many parts of the text? headings, subheadings?) • ESTABLISH LOGICAL RELATIONS between parts of the text ↓ STRUCTURE! (Logical relations expressed by signalling devices)
