The Uses of Stim • Symptomatic relief of chronic pain • Acute post-surgical pain • Acute post traumatic pain • Muscle re-education • Prevention of muscle atrophy
Situations where Stim is needed • When a specific muscle needs to be worked • Relaxation of muscle spasms • Rehabilitation of soft muscle tissue • To increase R.O.M • Stress relief • Increase in blood circulation • Pain relief
Electrical Stim NO NO’s • Do not use on pregnant patient • Do not use on deep vein thrombosis • Do not but Stim near front of the neck • Wait 48-72 hours before applying to traumatic or tissue susceptible to hemorrhage • Do not apply on swollen or infected areas • Do not place on fractured bones
Different Types of Stim • Interferential • Russian • Pre-modulated • Hivolt • Micro-volt • EMS
Russian Stimulation • Russian is similar to EMS but the difference is that it is used for deeper muscle penetration and a more complete contraction of the muscle fibers • Used to reduce muscle spasms, muscle tension, and to strengthen the muscle • Originally developed by the Russian Olympic team to help intensify their muscle strengthening program
Interferential Stim • Uses two different frequencies which combined together create a third stronger frequency that penetrates deeper into the affected area • Helps for greater pain relief and is used to effectively provide symptomatic relief and management of chronic pain and/or as a treatment for the post traumatic or post surgical client
