Pharmacology Neonatal Pediatric
Bronchodilators • Beta II agonists (sympathomimetics) • Albuterol and Lev-albuterol • Bronchodilates • Mild anti-inflammatory • Improves mucocilliary clearance • Racemic Epinephrine • Upper airway swelling • Croup • Post extubation
Bronchodilators • Anticholinergic (parasympatholytic) • Ipratropium bromide (Atrovent) • May react to this drug if they are allergic to peanuts
Anti-inflammatory • Inhaled steroids • Pulmacort for SVN • Many others for MDI and DPI • Mast Cell stabilizers • CromolynSodium(Intal) • Nedocromyl Sodium (Tilade)
Anti-inflammatory • Prednisone, oral • Solumederon, IV • Decadron, IV
Mucolytics • Mucomyst (Acetylcystiene) • Breaks up mucus • Very irritating • Pulmozyme • Breaks down white blood cells • Need infected sputum with WBCs to be effective
Anti infectives • Tobramycin (Tobi) • Antibiotic • Infected sputum • Pentamidine • PCP • Ribaviron • RSV
Methylxanthines • Theophyline • Mild bronchodilator • Increases drive to breath • Used on children in place of steroids • Caffiene • Used to treat apnea in newborns
MISC • Leukotrienes • Antihistimines • Both work to stop the inflammatory reaction at different points in the process, as do steroids also • Magnesium Sulfate • Promotes bronchodilation in children
