Learning objectives (course outcomes) • an ability to communicate ideas in a written form • an awareness of skills necessary to achieve success in the workplace • the ability to research and evaluate current events in an engineering context • an understanding of the role of ethical engineering in the work environment It is necessary to demonstrate achievement of all learning objectives to receive a passing grade
LOs achieved through assignments • Assignment 1: Ethics (LOs 1, 4) • Assignment 2: Professional Statement (LOs 1, 2, 3) • Assignment 3: Proposal (LOs 1, 2, 3) • Each assignment has 100 points. You must score 50% or above for an assignment to demonstrate achievement of relevant LO • 3 chances to achieve LO 1 • 2 chances to achieve LO 2 • 2 chances to achieve LO 3 • 1 chance to achieve LO 4
Grading Summary: Passing grades • Must demonstrate achievement of all LOs • Score = Average score on three assignments + Bonus points (defined shortly) • Attendance = Attendance points (defined shortly) • Grading scheme: • Grade A: Score ≥ 80 and Attendance ≥ 12; else • Grade B: Score ≥ 70 and Attendance ≥ 11; else • Grade C: Score ≥ 60 and Attendance ≥ 10; else • Grade D: Score ≥ 50 and Attendance ≥ 9
Written Assignments • Assignment 1: Ethics (due 9/20) (revised: due 10/11) • Assignment 2: Professional Statement (due 10/11) (revised: due 10/18) • Assignment 3: Proposal (due 11/15) • There is a writing rubric available on the course website. Grades are based on the following criteria: • Content • Organization and format • Style and tone • Writing fundamentals
Bonus points • Opportunities will be presented during the semester • Examples from the past: • Topic and speaker suggestions • Exit survey
Attendance points • Before each lecture, an attendance sheet will be given, one sheet per person. After the lecture starts, you will be given an attendance sheet marked “arrived late”. • Write your name and Purdue ID. Return the sheet after the lecture • If you have to leave early, turn in your attendance sheet to any of the organizers • You earn • 1 point for attending a lecture in its entirety • 0.5 point if you attend at least half of the lecture (because you arrive late or leave early) • Do not return the attendance sheet for another student
Grading Summary: Failing grades • Failing to achieve a LO, or • Score < 50, or • Attendance < 9
Assignment Submission • Due to the large volume • Through in-class paper submission only. • Through Blackboard Vista (SafeAssign) • Email submission is not accepted. • All deadlines are firm, late submissions are not accepted. • Deadline is strictly enforced. Severe penalties apply for late submission.
Plagiarism Checking • Students caught engaging in an academically dishonest practice will receive an F for the course. • University policy on academic dishonesty will be followed strictly. • Plagiarism detection tools may be used. • Cite all sources of quoted or summarized information.
Academic integrity policy • The ECE faculty expect every member of the Purdue community to practice honorable and ethical behavior both inside and outside the classroom. Any actions that might unfairly improve a student's score on homework or attendance will be considered cheating and will not be tolerated. Examples of cheating include (but are not limited to): • Sharing results or other information on a homework. • Requesting a regrade of answers or work that has been altered. • Filing an attendance sheet for an absent student. • At the instructor's discretion, cheating on an assignment or an attendance sheet will result in a reduced score, a zero score, or a failing grade for the course. All occurrences of academic dishonesty will be reported to the Assistant Dean of Students and copied to the ECE Associate Head for Education. If there is any question as to whether a given action might be construed as cheating, please see the instructor or the teaching assistant before you engage in any such action.

Lecture Etiquette • Turn off all electronic devices when entering the room • Do not talk to your classmates • Pay attention to the speaker(s) • If eating lunch, please sit in the back and eat quietly • If you come in late, enter quietly and take the first available seat--do not pass in front of the speaker
